BMX Bicycle motocross…

With the news that the UK’s largest skatepark is currently being built in Reading, it’s safe to assume confidence in BMX is on a high. Mark Sutton talks to the old guard and some newcomers to the 20- inch market about product…

Seventies

IF BMX is currently a big part of your business, or has potential to be, having an account with Seventies is a dead cert. As the one of the largest dedicated distributors to the sector, you’ll find complete bike brands designed by the legendary Matt Hoffman, through newer, yet immensely popular labels such as Subrosa and Cult, to everyday sellers from Kink, and, if you’re after a cruiser, Macneil. Just landed with the distributor are

Cult’s complete kids bikes. It’s perhaps rare to see as much attention to detail as is present in these bikes, which are designed from the ground up in 12, 16 and 18-inch wheel sizes, meaning children can start as young as three years of age. The spec is properly done too, with each carrying a scaled three-piece crank, handlebars and a sealed cassette hub sporting 25-9 gearing. One of the more popular brands in recent years is Seventies’ own Federal

Scoop

LETCHWORTH DISTRIBUTOR Scoop carries a variety of freestyle and race brands, from OEM wheel favourite Alienation, through popular labels like DK and Demolition.

New to the stable and announced just last month is Australia’s Tempered Bikes brand – a producer of frames and components best suited to trails, park and street riding. Scoop MD Mason Smith tells BikeBiz:

"We are proud to announce that Scoop will be the official distributor for the UK Tempered Bikes, with stock due mid- June. If your not familiar with Tempered they have been around for the last few years based down under in Australia, run by BMX rider Mat Lawton. Frames and bars are super high quality and have set themselves apart with their image and marketing on products like the Cross Bones stem and Anchor sprocket. You got to love the Anchor Down sprocket."

If you’re just dabbling in BMX, or need a budget solution, look out for Scoop’s own Vocal brand, which produces everything from investment cast cranks, handlebars, gyros and cables, spares such as axle nuts, in a variety of colours, and soft gods, among other things. For competitive race fans, DK has a

new frame dubbed the ‘Professional’, crafted from 7000 series aluminum and with unique, tapered tubing. Sizes spanning 20 to 22 inch top tubes are available, with 0.5 jumps between each. The frame carries a Euro bottom

bracket and is carried by Scoop in either black or white. 01462 650741

Bikes, which alongside sponsored riders such as Dan Lacey and Bruno Hoffman, have been shifting signature frames like there’s no tomorrow. Then there’s The Make, another label

exclusive to Seventies, again producing some unique signature frames. The latest of these is the ‘Chicken’

signature frame, available in a gloss black or ‘JD Green’. At 4.8 lbs and with a more traditional standover height, this frame’s built tough with heat-treated dropouts, and 4130 Sanko Chromoly tubing. Apparel and footwear popular with

riders in this market is extensively carried too. For shoes, you’ve a choice of the Orchid or Lotek brands, the latter of which has just had it’s most recent launches land with the Hastings Distributor. Each in Lotek’s line now carry an insole designed to better take impacts, as well as a dedicated pad for those using their footwear as a brake. 0845 3103670

CSG UK

CYCLING SPORTS Group UK’s catalogue goes much further than Cannondale and Charge Bikes. The Poole distributor is in fact one of the premier BMX specialists in the country, importing complete bike brands such as GT, WeThePeople and Mongoose. Alongside its varied bike catalogue,

WeThePeople also makes aftermarket frames and components – a highlight coming from the launch of Jason Phelan’s Irish frame, launched last year and now available in a stunning brass finish. Over a year in development, Phelan’s signature frame comes with a built in alloy seat clamp. It uses the best in Japanese tubing and up to the mark geometry. It bears an iconic Irish

logo CNC’d into the headtube and a sticker set designed by his friend and artist Dan Leonard. CSG also carries WeThePeople sister

brand Almond, which make some of the most popular riding shoes among the BMX crowd. Now in its third year we see the

brand up its game with five different models. There are some great new designs such as the Duke Hi and Low, as well as the new, improved signature Ben Hucke Belmont shoe and last season’s Riviera re-introduced as a mid-top. We also see a stylish, increasingly popular Vegan shoe in the range by the name of ‘the Valley’. The new Summer footwear collection drops this August 8th. 01202 732288
