Planning ahead

The BPA team would like to wish all of its members and everyone in the nursery industry a very Happy New Year and hope you are all looking forward to a prosperous 2012.

Of course many of you will be busily preparing for Harrogate Nursery Fair at the end of March and whilst planning to launch exciting new products and ranges at the show, don’t forget to enter the BPA Baby & Nursery Trade Awards (BANTA) to ensure you get the maximum exposure and recognition for your company. This year there is a change in categories and the BPA believes that this will encompass a wider and more varied range of products than in previous years. These include Child Restraints; Wheeled Goods; Playtime; Sleep Accessories; Travel Accessories; In Home; Safety; and Feeding, Cleaning & Changing. A minimal entry fee of £75 plus VAT has been introduced this year to cover administration costs and also to encourage exhibitors to be more selective with their entries, only submitting the best and most innovative products from their ranges.

Closing date for entries is 28th February 2012 and we apologise that no late entries will be accepted. Companies with shortlisted products will be advised prior to Harrogate Nursery Fair and will be required to deliver these items to the Organiser’s Office by 6pm on Saturday 24th March 2012 ready for final judging. Entry forms can be downloaded from the BPA website at www.thebpa.eu under ‘BPA Industry Awards’ or call Julie James on 0845 456 9570 or email: Julie@b-p-a.org for more information.

Join the UK Pavilion

After a hugely successful UK Pavilion at Kind und Jugend in 2011, the BPA team is busily planning an even bigger and better event for 2012. Previous exhibitors have until 31st January to confirm their stand requirements – either securing the same position as last year, or to request a new stand space. After this, bookings will be open to all BPA members – information and an application form can be downloaded from the BPA website. Also, the BPA is the Accredited Trade Organiser for overseas funding for UKTI and all Trade Access Programme and we will be co-ordinating all funding for the 2012 show.

Early information received from UKTI indicates that there will be some radical changes to the TAP grant funding process in 2012. Once we have received full information, we forward details to applicants, but early indications are that future TAP will be on a match funded 50/50 basis, but upper limits and the parameters regarding who will be eligible are not yet known. For more information about participating in the UK Pavilion or accessing TAP funding, please contact Adrian Sneyd at adrian@b-p-a.org or call 01902 882280 or 01902 880906

ENPC update Last year the BPA was involved in the formation of the European Nursery Products Confederation (ENPC), together with national associations from France, Spain, Italy, and this organisation is now fully established with new offices in Brussels. The ENPC aims to provide support and services for members at a European level to manage legislative activities and be involved in the preparation of high quality standards to continuously improve safety. The ENPC secretariat team consists of Maryke Hanneman and Marine Ejuryan who both speak a range of languages including English, French, Italian, Dutch, German, Turkish, Russian and Spanish, so the majority of callers to their office can be confident that their query will be dealt with effectively.

Baby Bling In December, an alarming new trend to ‘bling’ baby products such as dummies and bottles was brought to the attention of the BPA which immediately issued a statement on behalf of members to national and trade press. Products manufactured legitimately according to highest safety standards are

additions can easily fall off and cause choking if lodged in a child’s throat. Trading Standards is aware of these products, which particularly appeal to babies and toddlers because they sparkle and look fun, and are often sold on websites, independent shops and market stalls. Anyone who comes across such products are urged to call Consumer Direct on 0845 040506.

Infant nutrition trends Last year, the BPA partnered with Allegra Strategies, a management consultancy specialising in the analysis of retail and consumer lifestyle trends to offer members access to market information at a discounted rate. Allegra’s latest study, Project Kinder, is the most in-depth study ever undertaken in the UK for the infant nutrition market analysing 5,000 detailed online interviews with new and expectant mothers. This reveals that the 2011 UK infant nutrition market is estimated at £778.5m and is expected to reach just under £860m by 2014. Key findings are that most baby feeding decisions are made prior to birth and influence future shopping behaviour. Today’s new mums are savvy and hungry for information and fully embrace social media, websites and online blogs and on average join 7 or 8 online baby clubs. In addition, 91% of mothers with children under three years typically do their main shop in the top four supermarkets – Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons – compared with 82% of the UK population. Within the feeding equipment sector, the key market trend is to offer innovative products that simulate nurturing habits and mimic breastfeeding, and mothers base their purchase decision on factors such as bottle teat shape. Tommee Tipee and Philips Avent are dominating the feeding equipment market with 66% of mothers owning Tommee Tippee tableware, whilst smaller innovative brands such as Medela are entering the sector to cater for the high end market.
