Ni Breastfeeding

Support the breastfeeding consumer

Selling a product to your customer is great, but selling the right one is even better. Therefore having knowledge about the specific products is key and is especially important when helping a mother who needs breastfeeding products. Breastfeeding is a special time for every mum, but it can also be a challenging time and mums need to know they are getting the right advice when choosing the products to support them. It is inevitable they will have researched what they want but when faced with a variety of options there is no doubt they will have some questions. Ensuring that your sales staff know a bit about breastfeeding can become your point of difference, you don’t just sell the products you actually help customers make informed choices… this will certainly set you apart from other retailers or online shopping outlets that have limited interaction with the consumer. Also bear in mind it will often be the dads sent out on an urgent purchase, totally unsure of what to buy. When they are on the hunt for nipple shields or a pump they are bound to need some guidance. For example, if you understand the first 2 weeks is the most challenging then you can sympathise when a mother feels a little bewildered. It is also important to know that at three weeks and three months a baby will have a growth spurt and feed more regularly you can tell worried and frazzled mothers not to panic. Explain that it is completely natural, but this might be the time to introduce a breast pump. It will alleviate the strain and mean she can get some support with the feeding from her partner. It is also important to know how the products can help. If you can explain to a mother with cracked nipples that applying a hypoallergenic lanolin based ointment such as PureLan will aid healing, it would be a huge help. Or if the customer needs to store some milk for a later date telling her about the Pump and Save bags to store milk in the fridge or freezer will be a handy tip.* Also, knowing the difference between the pumps

is vital. A mother who wants to use it once or twice a week may be suited to a manual pump whereas a woman preparing for her return to work will require the support of a double pump or even a hospital grade pump to build up a good supply. You can certainly make a big difference with some basic knowledge and if you are really keen to become known for supporting breastfeeding mothers why not consider becoming a rental agent. Medela’s hospital Grade Symphony pump provides the ultimate breastfeeding support and is ideal for any mother who has had a multiple birth or prem baby, or later on as they return to work. You will be able to offer the very best pumping solution and the added bonus is being a rental or referral agent represents a good opportunity to earn without high inventory levels.
