A baby monitor is a device which allows parents to monitor their baby from another room. Monitors come in all various shapes and sizes and offer a range of features – from straight audio monitoring to lullabies designed to relax and calm the baby, to sensor mats which monitor whether a baby is moving or not. Monitors typically have a baby unit which is fixed in the baby’s room and a parent unit which is portable and can be carried as parents move around the house.

What is the difference between an analogue and digital monitor? The key difference between an analogue and digital monitor is the technology used and therefore the quality of the sound. Most Digital monitors use DECT technology – the same technology that is used in phones – to ensure you can hear every whisper between the parent unit and the baby unit. Older analogue monitors are based on radio frequency. Some of the older analogue monitors do not pick up very quiet sounds or suffer from interference such as crackling. On occasions, they have also been known to pick up other baby monitor frequencies in nearby houses or radio channels.

Other types of popular baby monitor include video monitors and sensory monitors. Video monitors feature a camera in the baby’s room and stream video pictures and sounds to a parent unit with a screen.
