Ni Carriers & Slings Carriers & Slings sponsored by
What is a sling? A baby sling is a piece of cloth wrapped around the carer’s body and designed to carry the baby on the carer’s torso.
What is a carrier? A baby carrier is a pre- shaped carrying device designed to transport a child whilst attached to the carer’s torso. Soft carriers are designed to allow the carer a hands free operation when standing and/or walking. A carrier is easy to use and can easily be adapted to different carers’ bodies.
How do I choose?
In addition to the ergonomic criteria, it is important that the carrier fits both carer and baby. Parents should therefore test different models. Trained babywearing consultants or qualified midwives can provide advice and will also be able to offer parents different models for testing.
Will baby be comfortable in the carrier – some people say it’s not good for the spine? When babies are born their spine is still rounded – just like it has been in mummy’s tummy. Over the course of the first year the spine is stretched to the typical S-form. Carrying a baby supports that development.
Did you know? The individually adjustable infant insert supports baby's head and
allows a healthy leg and back posture
Are there any particular fabrics I should look for? I’m worried about baby getting to hot or too cold?
Did you know? Security is important for the newborn. Protected like this, they are strong enough for exploring the world
Carrying your baby can be warm, especially in the summer season. The ERGObaby Performance Carrier is made of a lightweight, extra breathable material and especially designed for the warmer months during the year and for active parents.
When can I start carrying my baby?
You can carry your baby from birth onwards. In a baby carrier, a special infant insert is mandatory in order to make sure that the infant is positioned correctly.
I’ve heard that babywearing can impact positively on development – why is this? Babywearing promotes the bond between the parents and the baby and stimulates all the senses of the baby, especially the tactile and the olfactory senses. It is also promoting the healthy development of the hip and spine and satisfies the baby’s need for closeness and body contact.
When do I carry on the front, on the back or on the hip?
Did you know? When carrying in a baby carrier the main weight of the baby must be distributed evenly across the parents hips; this will prevent back problems
After birth the best position is on the front, belly to belly. When the baby has good control of its head and when it can be carried without an additional insert you can also start carrying your baby on the hip and on the back (at 6 months).
