Ni Pushchairs & Accessories
A gentle push in the right direction
Help the customer to make the right choice At the premium end of the market, parents will spend whatever it takes to purchase a pushchair that is as stylish as it is functional, while those on a budget will demand high performance at a good price. From travel systems to pushchairs, lightweight pushchairs to old-fashioned prams and a selection of accessories, the vast range of choices on the Internet and in stores can be overwhelming. Retailers with a range that reflects the life and style of their target market can help to refine the customer’s search, making the purchase of this important item a successful one.
In November 2008, research project ‘Talk to Your Baby’ examined interactions between parents and infants in face-to-face and away facing buggies, revealing that parents are twice as likely to talk to their children in face-to-face buggies, which could improve, or at least accelerate language development. In the last couple of years an increasing number of brands have responded to the call for innovation in this area, with the option for both now widely available. Retailers too have emphasised the features and benefits of this type of buggy to great effect and consumers are now very clued up on the issue, with many insisting on the face-to-face or reversible option. While a number of customers will have already researched makes and models on the Internet and sought the advice of family and friends, those buying for a first baby will often look to the retailer to help them make an informed decision. Those buying for a second or third child will also need a certain level of help and guidance, as the pushchair market is fast-moving and there may well have been advances in materials or design that will influence their choice.
Retailers should find out as much as they can about the customer

before demonstrating relevant models. Do they live in a town or village? Do they live in a house or a flat? Do they use public transport regularly or have any steps to climb as part of their daily route? Will they need somewhere to store large bags of shopping? Are they looking for something with height adjustable handles, enabling the pushchair to be used comfortably by both mum and dad? Though many pushchairs and travel systems come with accessories, this is another area where the customer’s knowledge may be limited; retailers should therefore advise if additional purchases are to be made. From rain and sun protection, to buggy bags, foot muffs, blankets, changing bags and insect repellent to pushchair toys, beverage accessories and baby head supports, ranges that guard against the elements or make baby’s journey more comfortable are sure to sell well. A big problem for parents is their baby or toddler becoming tired and frustrated on long journeys. There are now various products on the market designed to block out daylight in the pushchair, and even one for a car seat that will help to them to sleep. Buggy boards are increasingly popular nowadays too, allowing toddlers to hop on the back of the pushchair and enjoy trips out with their baby brother or sister in an entirely different way. Once the customer has answered a range of questions about their lifestyle and made their selection, retailers should be sure to check that the chosen pushchair fits in the boot of the car before completing the sale. It may seem obvious, but it happens...
