Ni Safety in the Home

Retailers help to reduce the risk of accidents at home

According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust, over two million children are taken to hospital each year after having an accident - around half of which happen at home. Many more accidents are thought to occur, but are treated by parents and carers or a family doctor, which means they do not get recorded in official statistics. Falls, burns and poisoning are said to be the most common cause. Once baby is crawling, safety gates are essential at the top and bottom of the stairs. Wall mounted safety gates are recommended at the top of the stairs, for additional safety and strength. This type of gate does not have a bottom support rail which could potentially cause a tripping hazard. Pressure fit gates are fine for the bottom of the stairs. Safety gates can also be used to keep little ones out of a room that is potentially dangerous, such as the kitchen, or keep them within a room such as their bedroom at night. Empty plug sockets represent yet another hazard for babies and toddlers keen to explore the world around them. Retailers should recommend socket covers to prevent children inserting their fingers or other objects, while protectors for sharp edges of furniture are useful too. Toddlers often love nothing more than opening and closing cupboards and drawers, studying and emptying the contents of them in the process! Simple safety accessories such as multi purpose latches, cabinet and drawer locks restrict access to these areas. They are easy to install and remove when required. Retailers should recommend that a safety gate be fitted to the kitchen doorway if possible, to restrict access to the kitchen unsupervised as the potential for injury here is particularly high. All fireplaces should be protected with a fireguard and retailers should recommend one that can be secured directly to the wall, solid wood or

stone fire surround. These can be used on open or electric fires and should restrict access to the hearth as well as the fire itself. The fire surround should completely cover the fire – even from the top of the guard.

Thermometers are another safety essential. A thermometer for checking a baby or toddler’s temperature is vital. The nursery meanwhile, should always maintain a temperature between 16C and 20C so it is important to use a room thermometer to ensure it remains constant. Bath thermometers are also important. From heat reactive feeding equipment to first aid kits and more, there

are many items out there designed to ease concerns about safety. A full understanding of the range of products required for the home will enable the retailer to help parents make positive, potentially life saving changes. While no safety product is ever a substitute for adequate parental supervision, there are many products, in addition to those mentioned here, that retailers could source for their shelves. Finally, customers should always be reminded to check items regularly to ensure they are working efficiently and to replace them at the first sign of damage.

Emmay Care’s Safety Range

A category often under estimated by retailers as frankly, it’s not too sexy or exciting. Most retailers don’t get that enthusiastic about their display or merchandising either. Some see it as rather boring and stocked almost reluctantly because the consumer actually wants to purchase the stuff. “Well, I have to have it but……..” was often heard during retailer research on the home safety category.

Yet research also clearly showed, amongst parents of all ages, that safety does matter, they do care about making their home a safe environment. It’s also (largely) an impulse purchase so a different approach from both manufacturers and retailers will see everyone making healthy profits. The biggest growth area for the category, unsurprisingly, is on line and we’re perfectly poised to help you make the most of this exciting opportunity. Research shows you can more effectively trade up here and we can help you achieve that.
