their koi twice a year in May / June and August. They produce over 1,000,000 fry every year and you can only imagine the work involved in selecting their koi through each stage of the culling process. The expertise needed to only select those that can become show quality is unbelievable.


Most koi produced are through natural spawning and the females are placed with three or four male koi. The whole procedure from selecting the parent stock and removing the fry can take as little as two weeks.


Tosai, placing the koi in larger mud ponds and keeping them in heated indoor ponds throughout the winter.


Oishi Koi Farm raises their koi both ways. The Tosai can be from 22cm to 25cm grown the natural way and Jumbo Tosai 35cm to 45cm. The mature size of koi raised in this way is, on average, the same.


future plans


In the future Oishi Koi Farm has plans to increase their Nisai mud ponds and koi houses. With many customers wanting to leave koi at the farm to grow on, space for growing is a premium. One 85cm Kohaku has been grown at the farm for a top hobbyist and has now been given back to Oishi to breed from. This koi was recently featured on the front cover of Rinko magazine due to its interesting pattern. She is seven years old and the quality of her skin and beni is still improving. This is the main reason Masaaki Oishi has chosen her as a parent koi.


The pictures shown are from a recent Showa spawning. After one week the fry have hatched and the start of the selection begins by firstly removing the white fry. Further culling will take place after another 45 days.

The koi are then placed in the fry ponds and fed at least twice a day. When temperatures reach 26 degrees feeding increases to four times a day. The production is huge and with so many varieties to breed this will continue almost continually through summer.

As far as koi sales go, the farm exports koi to Asia, America and Europe. Their website has over 600 koi for sale from all grades and sizes, for beginners to experienced collectors. Nobutoki San is given the tasks of photographing them, not just from above but all sides also, giving customers a very good opportunity to buy with confidence if they are unable to visit the farm.
