huge size because it is a symbol of power and courage.

After spending more than a year looking for a new house, I finally located a suitable place which is my home now. The gross area of my land is around 20,000 square feet. Of this the house occupies around 4,000 square feet, while the rest is garden area and the fish pond.

Now my pond is 13m in length, 11m wide and 3m deep and is home to my 38 koi. All of them measure over 70cm, whilst five are more than 90cm and four are over one metre. Of course I have some Go-Sanke, but there are also Asagi, Shiro Utsuri, Hi Utsuri, Kujaku Ogon and Chagoi as well.

choosing non Go-Sanke Now I would like to share with you some of

my views on keeping non Go-Sanke. We all know that the mainstream for koi keeping is to focus on Go-Sanke: Kohaku, Sanke and Showa. Most of the hobbyists may have less interest in those koi that are non Go-Sanke. My opinion is that there should not be any hierarchy between the species of koi – just like all humans are equal, whatever be the nationality, whatever the colour. I’m inclined to say that it is more appropriate for beginners to begin keeping koi with the non Go-Sanke varieties. This is because the price is much cheaper and the body of those non Go-Sanke species is much stronger. In my opinion they are less

Li Yuk Tak’s Ginrin Shiro Utsuri was again featured in Koi Carp Magazine in the June 2010 issue, page 70. It was included in our report about the All Japan Show Best in Variety awards and this was the comment made by Mike Snaden: “Once again, ‘it’s all about the Sumi’! Special Shiro Utsuri are very hard to find. Add the element of Ginrin into the mix, and it becomes pretty much impossible! To see a Ginrin koi with this kind of Sumi is incredibly rare in itself. But the fact that this koi has such a wonderful pattern, with Shiro-ji being completely free of any stray scales of Sumi, tells you that you are admiring an incredibly rare find indeed. An absolutely superb koi.”

vulnerable to virus and can grow much bigger in a relatively short period of time. By the way, I still keep a lot of non Go-Sanke. Once you have gained enough knowledge and experience in koi keeping, then you may be ready to face the challenges of keeping the more expensive Go-Sanke. By then, you will also be able to enjoy your hobby more and get more satisfaction out of koi keeping.
