DREW SIMONS Oishi Koi Farm I

Looking for show quality koi? Then Masaaki Oishi of Oishi Koi Farm could be the breeder you need. Drew Simons explains more…

About the author:

Drew Simons set up Koi Waterlife in 1992 and has enjoyed 18 years building very close relationships with Japanese breeders. After working with them on a one to one basis, these business relationships have very much turned into friendships. Drew visits Japan three or four times a year and over the years has sold many high quality koi from breeders such as Oishi, Omosako, Momotaro, Murayama, Sakuma, Sakai, Miyatora and Dainichi.

t was 75 years ago, back in 1935, that Shigemi Oishi decided to start up his own koi farm. It was probably one of the best decisions he could have made as, over the years, the farm has produced some wonderful koi. Not only that, the koi produced here really are show stoppers with an enviable history of taking major awards at Japan’s top koi shows. Today the farm is owned by president Masaaki Oishi and Director Kazuyuki Oishi, and managed by Nobutoki san. The koi produced here are testament to the hard work put into making the farm a success.

If you are looking to visit Oishi Koi Farm you will need to head to southern Japan and the Hiroshima Prefecture. This area is renowned for its top quality koi breeders, including Sakai, Takigawa, Omosako and Taniguchi. Oishi Koi Farm can be found at Shinichi Town Fukuyama, about 40 Minutes by train from Fukuyama Station.

The farm has a very historic place in the Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1952 the farm was one of the first to register to the Hiroshima Koi Society. At that time there was only a small number breeders to be given this certificate.

41 KOI CARP

amazing facilities The facilities found at Oishi Koi Farm are,

quite simply, breathtaking! They have a total of ten Tosai and Nisai mud ponds, plus 11 large fish houses. In addition to this the farm also boasts an indoor facility housing 43 ponds and over 60 ponds for the production of Tosai. This is where they hold regular auctions and promotions throughout the year. It’s plain to see when visiting Oishi Koi Farm that these facilities really have contributed to the success of the koi production, so much so that the farm concentrates its production on breeding quality Kohaku, Sanke and Showa. Producing show quality koi is not easy though; it is the result of decades of hard work in getting bloodlines and parent stock absolutely right. This takes complete dedication and commitment from everyone concerned.
