HOBBYIST PROFILE maria hayward
club organises annual koi competitions with the aim to promote the koi keeping hobby and introduce it to the public. We also organise trips to attend the annual koi competition held in Japan, as well as trips to visit the koi farms in Japan.
I was lucky enough to have the honour of receiving the award of Grand Champion of the 1st China Koi Show. I have also twice been 1st runner up in the Hong Kong Young Koi Show. However, my favourite koi is still the Ginrin Shiro Utsuri which has been awarded the prize of Sakura and the Best in Variety for three consecutive years. I purchased the koi in 2007 from Sakai Koi Farm in Hiroshima, with the help of Mr Ngai of Harbour Koi Farm. At that time the koi was 58cm. I liked the fish at first sight for its distinctive markings and strong black and white colour.
I would also like to add here that one of my koi, a Ginrin Showa which took the 60Bu Kokugyo prize at the 35th All Japan Combined Nishikigoi Show in 2003 (pictured right), is today used as a benchmark for evaluating Ginrin Showa in Japan.
thank you
The attraction of koi is difficult to descirbe in words but I am grateful to have had the chance to share my story with you. I hope I will have the chance to spot more rare koi in the future.
Last but not the least, I wish you and the magazine a prosperous future. We do hope that you can come to visit our koi show soon.
