a lttle about me Last year I was appointed as the Vice
President of The Hong Kong Koi Club, which has been established for more than 25 years. Some of our members have been indulged in the hobby of koi keeping for more than 30 years. Compared to them, I am just a novice. My own story about koi keeping goes back to about ten years ago when I bought a town house. At that time my interest in koi keeping had just been ignited.
It just so happened that there was a fish pond in the garden. The pond was not a big one; it was approximately two metres in length, three metres wide and 60cm deep. I found the depth of the pond was not enough to fulfil my interest in koi keeping, so I demolished the old pond and built a bigger one with the depth of one metre. I was under the belief that it would be big enough for keeping bigger koi.
Magazine. This chance came to me unexpectedly when one of my friends told me that he saw a koi belonging to me on the front cover of the November 2009 issue. This koi was my Ginrin Shiro Utsuri. I finally got the contact details of the magazine and wrote this article with the hope that I could share it with other koi lovers.

When I later discussed my newly built pond with my more experienced koi keeping friends, I was surprised to learn that the depth was still not sufficient if I wanted to keep bigger koi. I then had the pond rebuilt again with the depth of one and a half metres and the capacity of 20 tons of water. At that time, it was already a dream pond for me as a beginner.
learning new skills After meeting the basic requirement of having
a pond of an appropriate size, I started to go into deeper areas of koi keeping like the techniques of keeping koi, the ways to improve the water quality and how to build a proper pond. After spending some time researching and studying the information, I found that my pond was still far below the standard which I would like to have.
