Do you think the koi industry has suffered because of the Credit Crunch? Yes, money got very tight so people have been holding onto it for longer. However the signs are really positive and I think the industry is definitely on the up. More new customers are having ponds built, which ultimately means we are getting more hobbyists again. Of course this is always the best sign.
I like the fact that more women and children are getting involved in the hobby. Women are making more construction decisions these days – and they have a really good eye for picking the best koi!
How often do you travel to Japan? I go to Japan once a year but I’m continually buying koi from Japan via other agents if I see something I like. I always go to Niigata as, in my opinion, the fish are hardier there and they are some of the best fish! I like to visit breeders such as Shinoda and Kas. When I see a koi I really like I ask myself whether, if I took it back and put it on sale for, say, £295 would it be value for money? If the answer is yes then I buy it.
How has your relationship with Japanese breeders enhanced your enjoyment of the hobby?
Because I’ve got to know the breeders over a number of years I always know where they keep the good koi! I enjoy taking requests from customers and then seeing their faces when the fish arrive in the UK, and then after quarantine when they are allowed to take them home.

AUGUST 2010 39
Little Havens charity event
TC Koi will be doing another charity event for ‘Little Havens’ in 2011 so look out for details to help them support their local children’s hospice.
Do you have any advice for our readers? Make sure when buying something you do your measurements properly as the best product in the world can’t solve the problem if you have under estimated the size of your pond. Remember, every piece of equipment will need servicing in some way. It doesn’t matter if you own a Mini or a Rolls Royce – they still need servicing.
Also, when you are looking at the price of a koi, please consider the costs that have been incurred by the dealer such as transport, health, quarantine and heating etc. All these things have to be taken into account every time we put a koi on sale.
