To give comfort and confidence to potential customers…

T

he PKDA are celebrating their 10th year. At the heart of the organisation are people who are passionate about the welfare of koi and the professionalism of the industry. They are there for the benefi t of the hobby and koi keepers.

So why is the PKDA not more popular? They have the same goals as every wet and dry

dealer, don’t they? It can’t be the membership fee – at just £100 for a dry dealer and £150 for a wet dealer the cost is not prohibitive for individual businesses.

Perhaps more than anything membership to the PKDA offers koi businesses the

opportunity to hang a certifi cate over their door promising that they will adhere to a code of practice that has the welfare of the fi sh at its centre. A certifi cate issued by an independent organisation that does not have profi ts as its primary objective. That has to give comfort and confi dence to potential customers.

Once a member wet dealers can opt for biosecurity accreditation. The PKDA will guide you

through the process of setting up a biosecure koi centre which also has the support of CEFAS. The PKDA has around 28 members. In the UK there are probably 600 businesses that

could and should want the PKDA logo on their paperwork. I asked Marion Parker, the PKDA’s General Secretary, what she thought was the biggest barrier to membership: "The main problem is dealers ask ‘what can the PKDA do for them?’. I feel they really ought to be asking themselves what their business can do for the hobby."

In the last, two years fi ve businesses applying for PKDA membership have been refused

membership for failing some very basic standards in fi sh welfare. Let's hope you’re not buying your koi from them.
