wasn’t exactly like riding San Francisco streets, but the ones we rode would be a good training ground for it. Marc took us through the city, some of the suburbs, and finally over the bridge and onto the island. Away from the heavy mainland traffic,
the change in sound and scenery was immediately noticeable; it was as though everything had slowed down and turned quiet. There’s only one main, well-paved two-lane road on the island. We took the clockwise route, although we were later told that going the other way might have been a bit more interesting. Traffic was very light, with as many motorcycles as cars. Keeping dinnertime in mind, we did quick stops at Saint-Jean church (1734), a cheese shop, and one of the auberges along the circuit. We were curious and ordered a bowl for the table, along with soft drinks, thinking a nibble just to sample the flavor couldn’t be that bad. They were very tasty, but, like “Tripes a la mode de
Caen,” it was definitely a one-time thing. We finished the circuit much faster than it deserved, but we made it back to camp in time for a Friday night spaghetti dinner which topped off a great day. There were the usual camping chair fires at night, with some interesting talk about motorcycles and politics. The club had arranged several excursions
for Saturday. Some elected to ride one of the river roads, with a choice of right or left bank, each with its own appeal. Don and I went with the Quebec City tour, led by Lucie Veilleux and Michel Rosa (Grand Marshal of the 2015 Rally). This time we took the ferry across; motorcycles are not allowed in the old city, but if one wanted to ride there, commercial parking stations are close by. Lucie lived much of her life in Quebec and was a fount of interesting details and personal reminiscences of how the city has changed. It was a beautiful day with mild temperatures, the company was excellent, and the walking was easy. With Michel and Lucy taking turns holding forth on the features of Old Quebec, not only our group, but occasionally others gathered close by to listen in. Between the old city and the heights of the new there are many stairways, some wooden, some stone. We climbed up to the new city on what are
