concerned they won’t hear other traffic or emergency vehicles if they wear ear plugs. When exposed to high noise pressure our ears attenuate to the level, so not only is there long term damage, but in the short term our hearing gets impaired. Do your ears ring after a ride? This is a sign this is happening. If you have been riding for years without earplugs, your ears probably ring all the time and you might not even be aware of it anymore except in a very quiet environment. So because of this attenuation effect, you may find you hear traffic better with earplugs in. I always wear earplugs when I ride, and I have no trouble hearing other vehicles. Ear plugs are the only viable solution to
the problem of riding-induced hearing loss. There are many pairs on the market includ- ing custom made molded plugs, reusable tuned plugs and disposable foam ones. I have tried them all and prefer the dispos- able variety. They tend to provide the most protection, often over 30dB in sound pres- sure reduction. To insert a foam ear plug, first roll it in your (clean) fingers to make its width smaller, then pull up and back on your ear and push the plug down and for- ward into your ear canal until the outer edge is at the level of canal opening. As long as disposable plugs are kept in a
clean pocket or case, I have used them over and over a few times without getting an ear infection. Typically I will dispose of them every two days on a tour. Once you find a brand you like, you can buy them in bulk online. They are a very cheap and effective intervention to prevent hearing loss and also result in a more enjoyable ride.
