10 BMW OWNERS NEWS October 2015 By Chuck Manley #12106

IN OCTOBER OF 2007, WHILE CROSSING IOWA ON INTERSTATE 80 I experienced my first and only motorcycle flat tire. Traveling through a construction zone, something sliced a one-inch wide hole in the rear tire of the K 1200 RS. I was less than a mile from the next exit, but the only thing there was a run-down gas station with no services. Still, it was a place to park the bike and I had my Owners Anonymous Book and a cell phone. I made a call, and soon a fellow MOA member responded. He knew of

a local dealer that had a tire, volunteered to drive me and the rear wheel to the dealer so the new tire could be mounted, then drove me back to the bike. After about four hours I was on my way, thanks to a fellow member’s generosity. We became best of friends and rally together several times a year. Upon returning home, I immediately upgraded my MOA membership to include Plati-

num Roadside Towing and have renewed it annually. After all, the best way to not need a service is to pay for it, right? Several months back, MOA announced the new Platinum Roadside Assistance and Tire

Protection program. The new program includes not only towing to a dealer, but may include up to two free tire replacements for roadside damage or flats per year. Of course I signed up for the new program, knowing that I would never need it. I always keep good rubber on the bike, change tires before they are completely worn, and monitor air pressure closely. Returning from the Billings, Montana, “Be the Adventure” Rally, we decided to ride U.S.

routes rather than Interstate routes through much of South Dakota, Nebraska, and most of Iowa. I checked the tires on Friday morning, and all was well. We arrived home on Sat- urday afternoon, and I started an oil and filter change, letting the oil drain overnight. Oil change complete, I moved the bike off the center stand only to discover I had a flat

rear tire! Generally I can get 11,000 miles from a set of tires. This tire was practically new with only 4,000 miles of use and a lot of tread still remaining. I called the 800 number provided for the Tire Hazard Protection and was assigned a claim number. I took the rear tire and wheel to the dealer, who provided the necessary information to the Tire Hazard Protection claim representative to complete my claim. I settled with the dealer, and a check was mailed to me for partial reimbursement. The Platinum program works as promised. Fortunately I didn’t need the towing, but it

provides peace of mind knowing the service is in place. Oh yeah, the cause of the garage flat, a half-inch long upholstery tack that allowed air to slowly leak out of the tire. It was great getting to meet so many of you at the “Be the Adventure” Rally in Billings!

thank you to the Rally Chairs for their countless hours of commitment in planning and hosting a great event. Thank you to the volunteers that chaired more than 60 rally com- mittees. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers that worked thousands of hours one shift at a time. All of you did your part to make this event one to remember. Great job all! Fall riding is at its peak, and once again the leaves are changing colors. Take time to enjoy the season and go for a ride and thank you for being a member.
