He laughed. “As many times as you
want, go have fun!” The next morning, our team col-
lected and received the waypoint map. We scrutinized our options, choosing routes that were both easygoing and scenic. “We’re taking it easy,” Derek reminded us. “So let’s just enjoy the view and have fun, okay?” We agreed, and soon we were off on
our adventure. Immediately the Colo- rado Rockies revealed breathtaking views, their beauty without equal. As we found the dirt, our group began to space out. John took to the rear, his riding stiff and tentative. “Remember what we talked about,” I reminded him during a break. “It takes some time for novice off-road riders to acclimate to the dirt. Trust me, you’ll get into the groove before you know it.”
Soon we were well away from civili-
zation, skirting along snow dotted mountain passes. Before long we for- got about waypoints, opting instead to cruise and enjoy the view. We passed a lake, its color a remarkable shade of glacier green. As I took in the sight, a roar sounded behind me. I turned to

see John, coming up fast and waving for us to pull over. “Did you see that lake back there?” he
asked when we had stopped. “It’s spec- tacular!” “It really is something, isn’t it?” I marveled. “Do you want to grab some photos?” “I wanna do more than that,” John
replied. “Let’s go for a SWIM!” We stared at him, then at each other.
“John, we’re at 10,000 feet.” Mark said. “That water is probably near freezing. Surely it’s not a place to go SWIMMING.” But John had his mind made up. “I
gotta do it. You guys mind waiting while I take a dip? I promise it’ll only take a minute.” We looked at each other and shrugged.
“Sounds good John, go for it!” We turned back, heading toward a rough dirt road leading to the lake. As we rode, I mar- veled at John’s riding. In only a few miles he was looking better, his fears overcome by the excitement of an impending swim. We reached the waterfront and dis-
mounted, each of us scrambling to get our cameras out while John stripped down. Clad only in a pair of cotton
