Feel along the length of your foot, and from side to side. Feel the boot press on different parts of your feet and legs. Pay attention to feelings of both the inside and outside foot in a turn. Tose of us who consider ourselves to be non- kinesthetic learners will need to dedicate time to this process.

CREATE EXPERIENCES TO FEEL As instructors, we’ve taught drills for decades, hoping that the student will somehow gain some learning through repetition. Used wisely, however, drills can be used to create awareness of sensation. Once aware of what feelings you want students to perceive, start experimenting with ways to help pinpoint them. Start with the drills we all know. Pivot slips can create sensations in the lower leg and in the sides of the feet. Hop turns can highlight the way parts of the shin interact with parts of the boot. Skating can help skiers sense the way they move on the bottom of the foot. Identify the sensations, and help your students recognize them. Acknowledge when they get it right and allow them to describe their feelings in their own words.

GIVE A MAN A FISH… Te old adage goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Using the traditional methods of creating understanding through information provides temporary learning. Experiencing sensations can create a more lasting impact on learning. Students don’t have to use rote memory to remember what to do or what their instructor said, but they can tap into muscle memory to recall sensations. Even better, that kinesthetic learning will likely be more effective for most students than simple memories. When a student can reproduce a feeling, they can self-coach — and their learning never ends.
