poles cross behind the skier’s back and medium-radius dynamic turns with the inside ski off the snow before edge change – the most ever performed in a given day at Team Selection. We closed the day with 20-minute indoor presentations

that candidates

prepared before the event. Te topic had to be relevant to ski education.

DAY 2

Half of the group did a 40-minute prepared clinic on snow about a core belief. Te other half did a 15-minute short clinic on a topic pulled from a hat, without much time to prepare. Te short-topic groups had two skiing tasks (lane changes on a groomer and dynamic medium radius turns on off-piste terrain) with a movement assessment component included. Te evening indoor session featured stations in which groups from all disciplines worked together to answer a variety of different questions.

DAY 3

Te groups switched assignments from the previous day and the list of candidates was cut from 41 to 29. Te remaining 29 contestants gave additional short indoor presentations pulled from a hat.

DAY 4

Some candidates taught, while others skied, were coached, or analyzed skiing. Some candidates did it all. It all depended on what team selectors (who included team alumnae, other top PSIA educators, and even USSA coaches) wanted and needed to see from each person based on their performances in the previous days.

TEAM SELECTORS CHOSE WELL

For their wrenching task of choosing those who would make the team, I asked the selectors to find a group of athletes who have clean, fundamentally solid technique and could be trainable. Tey worked incredibly hard sifting through loads of information to

help select the current Alpine Team of 14 amazing instructors – a mix of 8 returning members and 6 who are embarking on their first terms (see page 60 for more information). I can’t thank them enough for their attention to detail and openness through this process. I’d like to give a special shout-out to Rob Sogard, Carol Levine, Mike Porter, Dee Byrne, Ellen Foster, Jeb Boyd, Finlay Torrance, Ron Kipp, Linda Cowen, T.J. Lanning, Kirsten Huotte, Dave Schuiling, Doug Daniels, Dave Gregory, Doug Pierini, and Will Foster. I’d also like to applaud all the candidates for their efforts. Tey are all well respected within their divisions, and have now been recognized on a national stage. Tanks to all those that were a part of this intense Team Selection event – I can’t wait to see the new Team in action as they refine or develop the educational tenets and teaching approaches they’ll share with PSIA-AASI members in clinics throughout the country this season and beyond.
