ALUMNI In Memoriam:EARL CHAMBERS

Oldest Living Graduate of SJBC Goes To Be With the Lord! BY: BRYCE JESSUP

orn August 8, 1921 in Brookings, South Dakota, Earl Chambers entered the presence of the Lord on August 7, 2016 in Placerville,

Calif. just one day before his 95th birthday. On Saturday August 6, he and Shirley were celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary at the Placerville Christian Church, and the following day between Bible School and worship, he went on to be with the Lord! Earl enrolled in the spring semester of 1940

at San Jose Bible College; just four months after the school launched and was a part of the first graduating class of 11 people. He came to SJBC at the age of 18, having given his heart to Christ and was baptized only two months earlier in Brookings, South Dakota. In September 1940, Shirley Wilson came

from Lindsay, Calif. to SJBC. She caught his eye, and the couple married on September 26, 1941. Earl started preaching for the Yuba City church during his honeymoon! He had a passion to want to preach the gospel and so

in his second year as a student, he became the minister of the Yuba City Christian Church, driving there every weekend 350 miles, before there were freeways. His ministry flourished and many came to the Lord and were baptized into Him. He went on to preach for a number of

churches in significant ministries, but many believe his most powerful ministry was that of an evangelist on TV, and preaching for scores of evangelistic meetings both here in the United States and in mission fields abroad. Earl retired in 1984, but continued his

television ministry for a total of 33 years and preached some 14-revival meetings during retirement! In visiting Earl and Shirley in their home

three years ago, I found a couple that were still passionate and vibrant about their love for Jesus and each other. They were still engaged in ministry, teaching and preaching frequently. I recall his speaking

for our 55 Alive seniors group at Adventure Christian Church a couple years ago on how Christ saves us from the “guttermost” to the “uttermost”. It was a powerful message! At the memorial service on August 20,

people gave story after story of the impact of his life on their lives as he challenged them to a fully committed life in Jesus. Thanks Earl, well done, good and faithful servant!
