MISSIONS
different language, practiced a different faith, had lived in a different culture and yet I knew we could become friends. By moving into an apartment complex where many
refugees lived, I began to see more of their day-to-day life. Development of friendships with my Muslim neighbors taught me that they were so interested in starting new friendships with Americans. One evening, we were visiting an Afghan family of nine, carving pumpkins and sharing dinner together in their small apartment. Masoud, the father, expressed his joy that we were with him as he said, “Fellowship is like a bridge. It will provide a unique opportunity to practice the love for one another. If the other people take one step to cross the bridge, I will take three steps to get closer to them.” With a vision the Lord gave me, I work and live as a
fundraised Community Mobilizer in Sacramento and our ministry is called “Raft Amad”—a phrase in the Afghan language symbolic of a trusting relationship between two parties.
Raft Amad exists as a Community-Centered
Initiative paving the way for mutually caring and honest relationships across the borders of different faiths. Peace-making and bridge-building through intentional relationships is our mission. Many are motivated by the love that Jesus modeled. Through community, the aim of Raft Amad is to learn from, live alongside and authentically love our neighbors – particularly those neighbors whose faiths and cultures may vary from one’s own. During Jesus’ time on earth, he built relational
bridges, broke down the barriers and filled the gaps when it came to ethnic, political and religious differences. Why shouldn’t His Church here in Sacramento do the same?
