The Unheard of Becomes Reality I

f you’ve read any of the recent headlines in the news and other media outlets about medical manufacturing, I hope you were as pleased and surprised as I was by the innova- tions taking place in this important industry. Headlines like TIME magazine’s “The Next Best Thing to a Cure for Diabe- tes”; NBC News’ “Device Reaches Where Cancer Drugs Can- not”; the Arizona Republic’s “ASU graduates create medical device to cure jaundice”; and Manufacturing Engineering magazine’s “3D Printing Comes to Life,” all illustrate the infi- nite possibilities available within the realm of manufacturing.

The innovations continue to surprise us. What’s not surprising is how much of this innovation is taking place in the US.

The once unheard of is now becoming commonplace. While the innovations may continue to surprise us, what’s not surprising is how much of this innovation is taking place in the US. According to SelectUSA.com, the “US remains the largest medical device market in the world with a market size of around $110 billion, and it’s expected to reach $133 billion by 2016.” In addition, “US medical device companies are highly regarded globally for their innovations and high tech- nology products…research and development investment in the domestic sector remains more than twice the average for all US manufacturers.” Sales figures were reportedly down in 2014 from 2013, but the industry itself appears to be stable, as “…different aspects (pricing, regulatory, reimbursement) of the business appear to have become more challenging in 2014” (emergogroup.com, Jan. 2015).

As the critical advancements in this important industry continue, SME is always looking for new ways to edu- cate and engage its members and customers. In 2014, for

example, SME co-located its RAPID and Medical Manufac- turing Innovations Series at one of its Canadian events, the Advanced Manufacturing Expo 2014. This year, the Medi- cal Manufacturing Innovations Series will be stateside with SME’s RAPID Conference & Exposition, May 18-21, 2015, in Long Beach, CA. While at RAPID, attendees can take part in in-depth sessions that cover personalized implants, orthope- dics, clinical and surgical applications, printing bone and tis- sue scaffolds, and bioprinting, as well as learn what’s on the horizon for medical manufacturing. To learn more about these sessions and/or RAPID, please visit rapid3devent.com. In addition to its event platform, you can access several online and print resources for medical manufacturing, such as feature articles in Manufacturing Engineering magazine, the new Advanced Manufacturing Now eNewsletter, the dedi- cated online medical channel through advancedmanufactur- ing.org or the headline-making news featured in the Medical Manufacturing Innovations newsletter accessible through sme.org/medical-manufacturing. Through the pages of this particular yearbook, you’ll also have an opportunity to learn more about the business improvement practices and advanced technologies in lean manufacturing; quality and compliance; micro and nano- manufacturing; materials; high-speed machining; additive manufacturing; bioprinting; cutting technologies; and work- force development, along with the areas impacted by medical manufacturing: • Orthopedics; • Diagnostics; • Surgical;

• Ophthalmic; and • Dental.

As a valued member and customer, I hope you’ll enjoy

reading all of the articles and information contained in this yearbook. I encourage you to visit sme.org to learn more about how SME can support you, your company and all your medical manufacturing endeavors.
