obituary

WINDECKER Barbara Wind-

ecker, an innovator in the transition of manual accounting to competition ac- counting by using computer program- ming, died Dec. 8, 2016. She was 84. She was a longtime member of

the Cantiague Figure Skating Club in Hicksville, New York. Ed Mann, an accountant and

membership development group coordinator at U.S. Figure Skating, worked closely with Barbara for more than 20 years. Ed remembers his longtime col-

league and friend this way: “I always found her to be inter-

esting, inquisitive and fun. She saw humor in many things that might frus- trate others, and was always willing to offer advice and words of wisdom.

“Barbara was a remarkable per-

son. First of all, she was fun-loving and full of life. It was always fun work- ing a competition with her. She was a stickler for detail and for getting things right, but she tempered that with a marvelously dry sense of hu- mor that kept the accounting room fun no matter how late the hour. “Barbara had an intense curiosity

that drove her to work a problem un- til she understood it. Whether it was mastering new computer software (she was a whiz with Word!) or striving to understand our sometimes arcane and conflicting rules of sport, Barbara never walked away from something until she fully understood it. “Hand in hand with that curi-

osity was the ability to explain her knowledge to others. She was a born teacher and served as a valuable (and most willing) mentor to an entire generation of accountants. Barbara was responsible for creating almost

all of the accounting school curric- ulum that teaches us the rules and procedures we need to know, writing chapter after chapter describing not only how we should do things, but why they have to be done. “When the IJS was created and

introduced to the U.S., Barbara again took the lead to first understand it and then to explain it to the rest of us. Her explanations of both 6.0 and IJS scoring are still in use today. “As national vice chair for ac-

counting, Barbara worked tirelessly to mold us into a professional and ded- icated team of volunteers who could take pride in our work and who were respected within the skating com- munity. As technology progressed, Barbara understood the value of hav- ing specially trained personnel and worked with Al Beard to create the technical accountant position.” Another longtime colleague and friend, Elda Stillwell, wrote this

in the online memorial guestbook: “Barbara will be in my dreams forev- er. She was my guiding light when I became an accountant and never a week went by that we didn’t talk or email one another. I miss her terribly.” Barbara became involved in skat-

ing when her only daughter, Christine, took up the sport at age 2. Barbara made all of her competition dresses through her daughter’s teen years. Outside of skating, Barbara

worked as an echo tech at North- shore Long Island Jewish Health for more than 25 years. An echo tech’s primary responsibility is to gather data that can be used by a physician to diagnose heart disease. She loved cats and always had a

cat in her home. Barbara also enjoyed playing solitaire. Barbara was predeceased by her

only daughter, Christine Ringler. She is survived by her grandsons, Garrett and Nicholas Athenas; and her cat, Julie.
