foot injury shortly after her victory at the 2004 Nebelhorn Trophy, and never fully recovered. While she wasn’t really ready to give up skating, the discipline and focus helped carry her into the next phase of her life, in which she combined coaching and higher education. “I coached through school and I loved it,” Donovan Hogberg said. “I stopped coaching after I got my first real job, but I still follow skating. I miss it. I definitely want to get back into it in the future. Hopefully, my daughter will like it one day and want to skate.” At Simmons College in Boston, she worked on a five-year com- bined undergraduate/MBA program. Te focus in her MBA pro- gram was financial analytics. After completing her degrees in 2013, she worked at Dunkin’ Brands Group, Inc. for three years before taking a maternity break and then starting her current job. She met husband Eric Hogberg through close skating friend

Chynna Pope, who ran a skating program in Ireland when Hogberg was playing professional hockey there. When Pope returned home from Ireland in 2010, she asked Donovan Hogberg to drive her to Rhode Island to visit Hogberg. Sparks flew and the two married in October 2014. Now an attorney, he hasn’t lost his passion for ice, so last winter they made a rink in their backyard. She hopes they’ll do it again this year.

“He shoots around the puck a little bit and I do my spins,” said

Donovan Hogberg, who also visits coaching friends at their rinks and takes part in some choreography seminars. She checked out Worlds in Boston last year and reconnected with old friends. In the next few years, Ava may be the next skater in the family. “Everyone says, ‘as soon as she can walk,’” said Donovan Hog- berg about putting her daughter on ice. “Maybe not that soon. We’ll have to see. I’d love it. I had such great experiences.”
