transformed into weekly projects. Tis season, the team participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month (pink ribbons in hair for all practic- es), collected markers and stickers for Sara Smiles (pediatric cancer), made inspirational cards and Socks & Roll (for the homeless), collected more than 200 pounds of food for Manna on Main (local food pan- try) and sent a Christmas shoebox filled with toys, clothing, shoes, educational and personal hygiene items to many children all over the world through Operation Christ- mas Child.

Exton Edge, Exton, Pennsylvania

Last fall the Exton Edge Syn-

chronized Skating Club hosted a car wash to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Te open juvenile team, made up of girls ages 12 to 17, came up with the idea to give back to the community, and chose this worthy organization. Its

pre-juvenile team joined in as well. Tis group of skaters, parents and coaches volunteered their time to participate in this FUNdraising event. Tere was a steady line of cars throughout the afternoon and at the end of the day, the teams raised $450. Each member of the team has been affected by breast cancer in some way. Tis event was a great opportunity for the skaters to give back to the community and to continue to build team unity.

Chicago Jazz, Rolling Meadows, Illinois

Each year, Chicago Jazz teams

work together to support various organizations focused on serving the needs of children and families in the Chicago area. During the 2016–17 season, the Chicago Jazz junior and novice teams’ commu- nity projects included preparing

and serving home-cooked dinners for more than 30 families stay- ing at a Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) while their children were in the hospital, in some cases with a chronic or long-term illness or ter- minal condition. Tese meals, along with their stay at the RMHC, allow families to focus on their sick chil- dren and not worry about paying for a hotel or meals. Te junior, novice and juvenile teams also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children, an organization that hand-packs and distributes meals to malnourished children throughout the world. Te skaters worked together with other volunteer groups to assemble and pack approximately 45,000 meals, or enough to provide nutritious meals to more than 100 children for an entire year. During the holiday season, the teams and their families continued their tradition of joining the Rolling Meadows hockey teams to collect items for the Northwest Community Hospital Pediatrics annual toy drive. Te donated toys, arts and crafts, and other items help to comfort and entertain children during their stay at the hospital. By encouraging community ser- vice and volunteerism in the skaters through teamwork, the hope is to instill thoughtfulness and compas- sion that they can bring forward in their daily lives.

Ice Mates

Ice Mates, Lexington, Massachusetts

Te Ice Mates had the honor

of helping Christmas in the City in Boston. Christmas in the City (CITC) is an all-volunteer-run or- ganization that hosts a holiday party for thousands of children (and their parents) who live in Boston-area homeless shelters. Te Ice Mates quickly learned that this was not an ordinary holiday party where presents are given, but truly magical event. CITC guests are treated to a catered lunch, a stage show, petting zoo, hands-on exhibits from local museums, carnival rides, clowns, visits with athletes from local pro teams and Santa. Tey are also of- fered medical screenings, one with dental screenings, flu shots and haircuts. For most of the guests, the Christmas in the City party is the best day of the year. As can be imagined, in addition to the gen- erous financial support of corpora- tions and individuals, thousands of manpower hours are needed to cre- ate an event of this magnitude. Te Ice Mates volunteered to help create the festive look and feel of the event by blowing up several hundred balloons, creating cards and post- ers, cutting ribbon and decorating the banquet room. Te team also supported the event by providing personalized gifts to many children. Tey hope to be a part of this event again in the future.
