OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING EVENTS TO BE TELEVISED LIVE ON NBC
Figure skating fans in the United States will
be in for a treat when they tune in to watch the 2018 Olympic Winter Games on NBC: Every event will be shown live in the evening from Gangneung in South Korea. So instead of knowing the outcome earlier
in the day and tuning in, fans will be able watch the action and the drama unfold live from the Gangneung Ice Arena. Te figure skating events will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day, but with the time difference, they will be televised live in the evening in the United States. site for short-track speedskating. “It’s a win-win situation in that it’s going to
be televised live, and that our skaters will be more fresh. Being able to compete earlier in the day is more favorable to athletes from North America who have had to travel several times zones,” said Mitch Moyer, senior director of athlete high per- formance at U.S. Figure Skating. “Also, it’s a win for speedkating. Short-track is a national headline sport in Korea, and it will be featured in the eve- nings.”
Another difference from the 2014 Games
in Sochi is in the schedule of the Olympic Team Event. In Sochi, the inaugural Team Event start- ed the day before the Opening Ceremony. At the 2018 Games, the Team Event and Open- ing Ceremony will be held on Feb. 9, with the Team Event taking place in the morning and the Opening Ceremony in the evening. Tere are no figure skating events sched-
uled the next day. “What that’s going to do, it’s going to free

up some of our skaters to participate in the Opening Ceremony if they choose to,” Moyer said. “At the last Olympics, several of our skaters didn’t march in the Opening Ceremony because they had to compete the next day. Tere’s going to be a full day of practice before the short pro- grams and the free skate for the pairs and men, so more of our athletes might elect to participate in the Opening Ceremony.” Te Opening Ceremony will not take place
in the coastal cluster as in Sochi, but instead in the nearby mountain cluster in PyeongChang. Selection of the United States Olympic
Team will be determined by the athletes’ body of work in sanctioned events starting in January 2017, with emphasis placed on the following events: U.S. Championships, World Champion- ships, the Grand Prix Final and the Grand Prix Series.
While the team will be named following
the conclusion of the 2018 Prudential U.S. Fig- ure Skating Championships in San Jose, Califor- nia, athletes’ placements at those championships do not guarantee a spot on the Olympic Team.
