THE HPMS IS A GROUP OF EVALUATIONS DESIGNED TO GIVE ATHLETES, COACHES AND PARENTS INFORMATION IN THREE KEY AREAS: MOBILITY, STABILITY AND SYMMETRY.

MOBILITY (The range of motion within a joint or joint system): In skating, mobility is critical for the athlete to move freely, execute difficult positions and prevent injury in the case of an awkward or hyperextended position.

STABILITY (The body’s ability to stabilize a specific joint or joint system): Stability is important in all aspects of skating technique, from the basic ability to execute and maintain posture and edges to jump takeoffs and landings, holds, positions and lifts in pairs, ice dance and synchronized skating, and providing a platform for power.

SYMMETRY (The similarity or difference between the left and right sides of a skater’s body): Symmetry is particularly important in identifying the potential for developing injuries in a specific body part. Asymmetric tightness is often more of a red flag than tightness in general.

CONCUSSION: The HPMS also includes a balance assessment, which provides useful information should an athlete have a concussion or suspected concussion in the future.

WHO CAN USE THE HPMS? The HPMS is for athletes who are serious about maximizing their performance ability, power, jump height and landings, and who want to head off serious injuries before they occur.

The screen is administered by a group of physicians, physical therapists and certified athletic trainers with specific expertise in movement screens. Each participating athlete will receive a detailed report, flagging areas of concern (results are strictly confidential and will never be shared without an athlete’s permission). Athletes will also receive a thorough explanation of exercises to correct flagged areas.

The HPMS is based on established movement screen protocols commonly used in sports medicine that are particularly relevant to ice skating.

U.S. Figure Skating will be offering the HPMS on a limited basis with S.T.A.RS. combines nationwide and at specific high performance camps.
