THERAPEUTIC SKATING

PARTICIPANTS HAVE A BALL AT SKATEFEST

2014 Olympic team bronze medalist Ashley Wagner stops by to share a smile with SkateFest participants.

Learn to Skate USA worked with Skate in the Park to bring SkateFest back to Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Dec. 10. SkateFest took place in Acacia Park, the downtown Colo- rado Springs seasonal outdoor ice rink. T e event included three sessions with free lessons from certifi ed instructors, free skate use and free ice time. It also featured a fi rst-of-its- kind skating session designated specifi cally for therapeutic recreational skating, a program designed for participants with physical, intellectual or developmental disabilities. World silver medalist Ashley Wagner made a special appearance, posing for photos and signing autographs with members of the Colorado Springs community. In all, the event introduced around 125 skaters to the ice, almost none of whom had a previous skating background.

Say cheese! Skate in the Park, situated in the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, gave skaters the perfect on-ice photo op in front of the Front Range and picturesque Pikes Peak.

Coach Chandler Carroll cheers on William McTigue, a participant in the therapeutic recreational skating session.

Coach Erin Tucker lends a helping hand and a smile. Tucker was one of many certifi ed Learn to Skate USA instruc- tors on hand to provide free, quality instruction.
