Glenview Blades, Glenview, Illinois
In September, 38 skaters from
the three Glenview Blades teams, ages 7 to 18, hosted a skate-a-thon and skate party at Glenview Ice Center. A total of $528 from the events was donated to the North- field Township Food Pantry. Te food pantry was started about 50 years ago to assist Township residents who are unable to pro- vide enough food for themselves and their families. In December, the skaters donated their time by wrapping gifts for Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook, giving to families in need during the hol- idays. Youth Services fosters the social and emotional well-being of children and youth.

has taken part in several commu- nity service events, with the goal of accomplishing at least one activity per month. Its first activity was col- lecting sports equipment to donate to children in need. Te Starlights frequently visit the Sunrise Senior Living Center to decorate its build- ing and talk with residents. Te team participated in making blan- kets for hospice care patients and writing holiday cards to deployed military members. Many members of the team also took part in the Color Run, which benefits Special Olympics. Finally, the Starlights collected donations and the nov- ice team members went shopping for the Chicago Cubs Toy Drive, which benefits children of House of the Good Shepherd Chicago. All of these events have been eye-opening and satisfying for the team, but the project that has had the most im- pact involves the recurring trips to Sunrise Senior Living. It is always nice for the girls to see the same excited members of the home and

ask them how things are going. Te team also has a lot of fun putting up the decorations for each season, knowing that while they are getting into the spirit of the holiday they are also bringing joy to the commu- nity of the home.
Creative Edge, Waterford, Michigan
Creative Edge teams used their
annual kickoff exhibition as an op- portunity to collect items to donate to the Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL). Te MARL has been serving animals in the commu- nity since 1953. One of the Creative Edge coaches adopted a dog from the MARL (pictured), leading to the team’s interest and involvement in collecting items for the dogs and cats at the shelter. Te MARL pro- vided Creative Edge with a wish list of items that it needed for the ani- mals. Donations were collected the night of the exhibition, but Creative Edge supporters who were not able to attend the exhibition still sent in items to be donated.

Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan
Adrian College teams raised
more than $6,700 for the Alzhei- mer’s Association in September. Ath- letes then spent an afternoon social- izing with families and caretakers of those who suffer from Alzheimer’s at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which was held on the Adrian College cam- pus. Skaters enjoyed being able to interact with the community that
supports them so strongly and share stories while walking the Bulldog Mile around campus. Additionally, the team runs a completely volun- teer-based Learn to Skate program every Sunday. Tis is a great time for skaters to interact with and teach children in the Adrian area how to skate, and share their love of skating with our newest gener- ation of athletes. Skaters have also participated in smaller communi- ty service activities throughout the season. Many skaters visited Sunset Village, an assisted-living facility in Sylvania, Ohio, to interact with res- idents, watch last season’s programs and talk about synchronized skat- ing. Skaters also assisted in Trick or Treat Patrol, in which skaters along with other Adrian College Bulldogs, helped children safely cross streets on Halloween to ensure a fun and safe night. Finally, skaters participated in Shop with a Hero, in which skaters helped underprivileged children in Lenawee County pick out Christmas presents.
