Casey Cares hosts #GetUp skating party

Olympic coach Audrey Weisiger and the staff at the Fairfax Ice Are- na in Fairfax, Virginia, generously donated two hours of ice time, rental skates and lessons last De- cember to families from the Casey Cares Foundation, which pro- vides uplifting activities for fami- lies with critically ill children. The event’s theme mirrored U.S. Fig- ure Skating’s #GetUp campaign, stressing the importance of get- ting back up when we fall.

Weisiger taught the families skat- ing lessons, including how to fall and get back up, and two-time

Olympian Michael Weiss and his family made a special appear- ance at the event, held at the rink where he fi rst learned how to skate.

The Casey Cares Foundation, es- tablished in 2000 and headquar- tered in Baltimore, Maryland, is a

nonprofi t that works with fam- ilies in six states throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and in Washington, D.C. The foundation provides ongoing and uplifting programming to critically ill chil- dren and their families, typically providing a child with about six programs each year.

Creative Ice Theatre in Woodridge, Illinois, participated in a fl ash mob marriage proposal of Dimitrius Williams and Tyler Limonez on Dec. 28 at Seven Bridges Ice Arena. Looking for a creative and meaningful way to propose, Williams sought the help of Creative Ice Theatre. “It was fun but challenging to create choreography that would be romantic and memorable for this very special occasion,” team choreographer Marina Gromova said. A carefully orchestrat- ed plan unfolded, unbeknownst to the prospective bride. The rink’s fi gure skating director, Gerianne Johnson, introduced Creative Ice Theatre, a team of 23 skaters, ranging in age from 10 to 17, for a brief performance. They started by skating to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” a song that has special meaning for the couple. Midway through the performance, the music changed to Bruno Mars’ “Marry You.” During the “Marry You” performance, Creative Ice The- atre coach Yevgeny Martynov continued giving Limonez a private skating lesson. He led her to center ice, where the team encircled her. At the end of the performance, Williams joined her on the ice, and as the music faded, he got down on one knee and proposed. Stunned and overwhelmed, Limonez said, “Yes.”
