How to Craft a

Create summer fun from recycled bottles Tiki Torch

Give recycled materials a new life. Photos by Percillia McCrary

Step 1: Remove labels from bottles

Peel off as much of the outside part of the paper label as you can. Place approximately 1/4 cup of washing soda in a basin. Fill with HOT water, and stir - to dissolve the washing soda. Add bottles and let soak at least 2-3

hours. Use a dish sponge to remove the sticky

residue. A fl at scraper can be used to re- move bigger globs of residue. If there are still spots of reside that will not come off, try removing them with nail polish remover.

Let the bottles dry completely. Step 4: Assemble Step 2: Drill hole in the bottle lids

Using the drill and spade bit, drill a hole as close to the center of the lid as you can. (Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear while using power tools)

Folding the wicks in half lengthwise, thread them carefully from the bottom of the lid out through the top of the hole you drilled previously. Using a funnel, fi ll your bottle to the bottom of the neck with tiki torch oil. Put the lids back on the bot- tles and allow them to soak up the oil for at least 5 minutes.

Step 3: Paint the bottles

Wrap rubber bands around the bottles to incorporate artistic design. There is no right or wrong way to do this, as long as the rubber bands sit tightly against the bottles so paint cannot get through to the bottle. Using several very light coats, spray paint the bottles (and lids, if you choose) in a well ventilated area. Let paint dry ac- cording to the instructions on the paint can. Remove the rubber bands (this will make a mess as the paint fl akes off the stretched rubber bands).
