Torch
One of the most enduring parts of the Games is the torch relay, which culminates in the lighting of the Olym- pic fl ame at the Opening Ceremonies. Each Games has its own design, and over the years many have been cast. For the 2012 Games in London, parts of the torch were cast by Alucast, an aluminum casting facility in Wednesbury, England. Alucast used gravity casting to produce aluminum parts that kept the inner and outer skin of the torch in place.
Weightlifting T ere’s maybe no sport in the world
as defi nite as weightlifting. You can either lift a weight or you can’t. T e person who lifts the most wins. And a big part of the sport are the weights, which are rubber-coated, cast iron and rest on a steel bar. T ey’re heavy, unfor- giving, and when dropped by a compet- itor, they don’t break. A collar, a metal component that keeps the weights on the bar, is also used. In competition, the weights of the disk range from 1.1-55.1 lbs. (0.5-25 kg).
