JCB to cut 400 jobs

It is a sobering thought that, in an issue where EHN takes the pulse of our UK and Ireland hire industry and finds that, generally, hirers are reporting record turnover and profits, the picture in world markets is much less positive. Global manufacturer JCB announced in late September that it is to cut 400 jobs after a "dramatic" slowdown in these markets.

Chief Executive Graeme Macdonald reported, “In the first six months of the year, the market in Russia has dropped by 70%, Brazil by 36% and China by 47%. Parts of Europe are also struggling, with France down by 26%. Even the strong growth in the UK and North America has softened due to a fall in market confidence over the summer.” In total, JCB employs 6,500 staff in the UK.

Clements helps develop new platform

Clements Equipment Hire of Coventry has helped develop a new truck-mounted

access platform for enhanced safety when used for work on motorways and highways. Sales Director Len Wright worked with manufacturer, CTE, to develop the new specification ZED 21JHV. It is designed to allow personnel to enter at the rear of the cage, away from oncoming traffic, with a specially adapted step at the rear instead of to one side. It also has dual outrigger controls, mounted on both sides of the vehicle, and an emergency lowering system is provided on a wander lead.

The machine can be set up in a single lane closure, reducing traffic management costs while still maintaining a safe working environment. Clements has already hired it to a client undertaking motorway improvements in the Midlands.

The new facility was officially opened by the Mayor of Alton, Graham Hills.
