Brett Thompson, Operations Director of Alide Hire Services
Although some companies within our industry have experienced poor quarterly results, Alide has seen steady growth similar to that of 2013 and 2014. The large investment we have made this year is based on the confidence currently within the market. Despite
traditionally low rates for ‘loss leaders’ such as compressors and rollers, customers are now seeing
the value in quality and service, and are willing to pay for this. Alide has a positive outlook for the next few years and we are already preparing our ‘shopping list’ of plant and tools for 2016.
” “ David Johnstone, MD of Your Equipment Solutions, Grangemouth
The prospects for our business remain very positive and I have certainly not seen any significant market decline in recent months. Indeed, we have achieved 55% growth year-on-year in the first five months of our financial year. Independent hire businesses have the ability to trade with their customers in a more consistent manner in terms of equipment quality, product offering, delivery/collection expectations and pricing, whereas some national companies appear to struggle for consistency across their locations, and this continues to assist our growth.

Mike O’Donnell, Director of Kellaway Hire Services, Bristol We have seen continued growth into 2015, achieved mostly through
word-of-mouth, internet advertising and social media. We have seen turnover rise by 30% on last year which has allowed us to continue to invest heavily in new
equipment, such as diggers, dumpers, compressors and tools to keep up with the demand. Success comes from being open, friendly and professional with customers and suppliers. As Crosshire commented in
the September issue of EHN, we believe the key to growth in our industry is having knowledgeable staff who have service at heart.
Neil Johnson, MD of Beaver Tool Hire (Chichester) ””
Along with a lot of our industry we saw very strong trading figures in 2014, which was a very good year for us, as was the first quarter of 2015. However, around the General Election and the months afterwards, we certainly noticed a slowdown in trade. The situation has recovered a little in the last couple of months and I’m confident that this trend, albeit at a slow pace, will continue into 2016. Going forward, local competition from national and other independent hirers remains strong, but we remain focused on providing quality equipment with good levels of availability and place a heavy emphasis on customer service.

Neil Graham, MD of The Hireman, London
Unlike some national
hirers, The Hireman continues to thrive. Of course, I can only comment on our local market and there’s plenty of building work in London and the Home Counties to keep us growing. We have always pursued careful sustainable growth, which provides careers for our people and a quality service for our customers. Our fourth depot in 2016 will continue this expansion, but we know we’re reliant on the health of the construction industry. And I believe our government needs to do more to help builders increase margins, making them less sensitive to economic uncertainty, with its increasingly global context. In the meantime, perhaps a period of cautious optimism, rather than boom and bust, won’t be a bad thing for us all.
