pressure and lubricates the pistons. Without this lubrication, the metal-on-metal would generate so much heat – the engine would seize.


Machinery consumables The consumables for the waste and recycling industries are extensive, but popular ones include:


Baler wire Baler wire shouldn’t be underestimated as an important part of your professional machinery and kit supplies. Baler wire comes in different shapes, lengths and is often cut according to the exact specification of the buyer. Normal wire will not suffice when it comes


to tying large, industrial bales. The reason for this is that baler wire is made from galvanised steel or annealed wire. Galvanised wire is dipped into raging


temperatures of zinc oxide, which results in creating a non-corrosive and moisture- resistant wire. Galvanised wire can last for an incredibly long time. Annealed wire is heated, then cooled


which removes the internal stresses to the wire, making it stronger, whilst increasing the carbon within the wire, resulting in increased flexibility and the reduction of brittleness. Some baler wires can be galvanised and


annealed, creating a super-strength product. Whereas standard wire can become brittle,


baler wire is tough and specifically designed to handle the intense bale weights it must wrap. The diameter of baler wire can also be


determined on the specific needs of the manufacturer Flexibility and strength are the two key


attributes that buyers are looking for when purchasing baler wire and properly treated baler wire will provide both, whilst at the same time being cost-effective. Baler wire can also be used for a range of


other uses in the construction, waste and skip industries, such as packing and transportation. Like with any consumables for industrial


machinery, using a quality product will ensure that there is an increased chance that the wire has been through the galvanisation or annealing process.


Baling strap Baling strap is designed for heavy bales that would normally be strapped with baling wire. It costs less and is more flexible than wire. Commonly they are made of heavy-grade


polyester, which can be stronger than light-grade steel and can withstand all weather conditions. Buyers use baling strap as an alternative to


baling wire due to its non-toxic properties as the material doesn’t corrode or rust. They are shock-absorbent and offer solid protection during transport, with no risk of damage to vehicles due to sharp edges of wire.


Compactor bags Compactor bags are designed specifically to ensure that the filling of the bag and removal is an easy process. Some manufacturers sell


‘pre-cuffed’ bags which makes installation and removal from the compactor unit, a quicker and more fluid process. Compactor bags are very strong and


durable, often with 2-ply layers for additional toughness. The majority are versatile and made to fit most compactors.


Industrial bags You probably wouldn’t think of plastic bags being of much importance when thinking of consumables, but strength, durability and size are all significant. Industrial bags are made of PVC (Polyvinyl


Chloride), an ideal material to handle the large volumes of dense weights needed in the waste and recycling industries. For example, shredded waste can be very heavy due to the weight of the materials and the compaction contained within them. PVC is cheap, durable and easy to


process, making it an ideal material for industrial bags. Good quality bags will have a higher chance of being made of PVC, rather than PVC with additives, some of which can reduce the efficiency of the bags. It’s easy to put profit before quality, but


low-quality will always result in low- durability, meaning that the bags will be prone to snapping, ripping at the seams and fall-outs.
