W.A.S.T.E’15 A huge

Skip Hire Mag success for

In a candid and open interview, Debbie Higham, Founder of W.A.S.T.E and sales and operations manager of Skip Hire Magazine, talks to acting editor Kerry Voellner about the exhibition, the story behind the idea and her plans for the future of the show.

Why did you decide to do the W.A.S.T.E Exhibition?

“When I joined Skip Hire magazine in 2011, it was in the forecast when I was doing the business plan, to develop the magazine and to do an exhibition. What I had to do initially was to get

the magazine recognised as a serious, professional magazine and a voice for the industry, but also a magazine where people would pick it up and think ‘Yeah

– this is a good read.’ “I had to get the magazine to the level

that it is now, before I planned any sort of event. That happened and that’s when I put the business plan together, took it to the directors and said ‘This is what we can do, this is how much it’s going to cost and this is how we can make it happen. “What I really wanted to do was bring

the magazine to life for our advertisers and subscribers. So it was always in the pipeline and that’s how it started. “On the first year, W.A.S.T.E.’14, we

were pleased with the outcome of the exhibition, so I could see the potential for another W.A.S.T.E for 2015. Again, we worked with industry specialists like the CIWM, EA, Defra, HMRC and UROC and WAMITAB.”

“Well done guys ... all of you! Major step change upwards on last year ... better layout – which created good visitor flow. Footfall looked well up – so will be interested to see the numbers when you have done them. You were very lucky with the weather ... It was like driving through a car

wash by the time I got to the M6.” Adrian Graves, Boughton Engineering

What inspired the concept of the W.A.S.T.E brand?

“It was weird because I came up with the name and everyone was like ‘Wow Debs, that’s the best thing you’ve ever done.’ For days, I couldn’t stop thinking about how we could somehow incorporate a skip and waste into the idea – and then it just came to me; Waste And Skip Trade Exhibition and W.A.S.T.E was born.”

What are your objectives for the show?

“The objectives are to give the exhibitors a really good return on their investment. It’s about getting the right type of people there.
