FCC Environment customer HMP Rochester scoops National Recycling Award
HMP Rochester and Abacus Furniture Project, together with FCC Environment, one of the UK’s leading waste and resource management companies, have won a prestigous National Recycling Award (NRA) HMP Rochester and Abacus
Smart City waste logistics system provider Enevo receives $15.8 million funding led by Foxconn, Ginko Ventures and Mistletoe from Japan
Enevo provides a fully automated waste logistics operations management solution that creates and forecasts optimal waste collection schedules and routes that save up to 50% in costs and increases service quality by avoiding waste bin overflows and excess fleet utilization Enevo, the leading provider of
waste logistics solutions for Smart Cities, has announced a $ 15.8 million funding round led by Foxconn, Ginko Ventures and Mistletoe, with Earlybird, Lifeline Ventures, Finnish Industry Investment and private individuals joining as existing investors. Enevo has earlier secured $ 10.3 million funding in 2012 and 2013. Enevo’s ONe waste logistics
operations management solution uses smart fill-level sensors, advanced analytics and a cloud based dynamic scheduling and routing engine to provide the most efficient waste collection operations for entire cities. The ONe solution is being deployed in 35 countries by 145 customers, bringing direct cost savings up to 50% together with higher service quality as overflowing bins and unnecessary fleet utilization are eliminated. “Operational efficiencies due to

Enevo ONe are transformational to city waste management operations. Robust and care-free sensors, predictive analytics and automatically generated dynamic schedules and routes are how waste collection in cities will be managed in the future”, comments Fredrik Kekäläinen, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Enevo. “Enevo’s team has made its
global vision a reality with focused execution and smart waste logistics systems already running from the US to Japan. This is in full alignment with the type of company that Ginko is passionately seeking to back. IoT will transform many industries, and Enevo’s plug-and-play solution and frictionless business model are truly changing the waste management industry”, said Jean-Francois ‘Janne’ Baril, Founder and Managing Partner at Ginko Ventures. “With Foxconn as a strategic
partner, we can make a paradigm shift in our wireless sensor hardware development and to expand solution to additional verticals globally. Mistletoe opens up a broad network in Japan, one of our focus markets, as well as globally in the IoT, smart city and telecoms industries”, adds
Mr.Kekäläinen.

Furniture Project won the award for Best Partnership Project for its bike restoration and reuse scheme. The prize recognises that the partnership and innovative working with FCC Environment has resulted in more effective and efficient performance. Commenting on the prize, Reuse
Development Manager at FCC Environment, Steve Bell, said: “FCC Environment is committed to making a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate. Our bike restoration and reuse scheme with HMP Rochester and Abacus Furniture Project not only sees bikes that would otherwise go to landfill be brought back to life, but helps prisoners gain new skills and
improve their chances of gaining employment upon their release. This award recognises the brilliant work of everyone involved.” Robin Latchem, editor of Materials
Recycling World, said: “We were proud to highlight the excellent winners on the night who, together, show how innovative and forward-thinking our industry is. These examples of best practice are a beacon to others who are increasingly realising they have to be smarter in terms of recycling, waste reduction and resource efficiency. And it was clear everyone had a great time.” Hosted by industry magazine MRW,
the awards are a calendar highlight in the waste sector. FCC Environment was nominated for three prizes on the night; Best Energy from Waste (EfW) Initiative for Lincolnshire EfW, Best Partnership Project for its bike reuse scheme with HMP Rochester & Abacus Furniture Project, and Public Service Recycler of the Year for its contract with HMP and YOI Rochester.
‘Significant’ progress in flexible packaging recyclability project
Significant progress has been made in trialling and developing new designs aimed at greatly improving the recyclability of flexible packaging, according to resource recovery specialist Axion Consulting, which is leading a collaborative R&D project involving high-profile global brands. Axion is working with a number of
partners on the REFLEX project; Amcor Ltd, Dow Chemical Company Ltd, Interflex Group, Nestlé UK Ltd, SITA Holdings UK Ltd, TOMRA Sorting Ltd and Unilever UK Central Resources Ltd. The two-year innovative project is co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. The project has a new website with more details at –
www.reflexproject.
co.uk. Research has focused on
exploring and evaluating alternatives to previously difficult to recycle multi-layer films, which are potentially more suitable for recycling and yet still deliver the performance requirements and technical properties needed for products ranging from
confectionery to detergent. “We are making significant progress.
For example we have taken multi-layer packaging structures that currently use incompatible polymers and we have redesigned those using polymers which can potentially be recycled together,” explained Axion’s Project Engineer Richard McKinlay. Another success includes
optimisation of NIR (Near Infra-red) sorting technologies to detect and separate mixed polyolefin (PP and PE) packaging, such as sweet wrappers, crisp packets and bread bags. This has broadened what can be sorted and separated for recycling from mixed post-consumer flexible packaging. Capturing this mixed polyolefin
packaging would divert more of it from landfill, while opening up interesting new options for the types of recycled polymers that could subsequently be made from it. The project has attracted high levels
of interest from Europe and internationally, including other brand owners, non-governmental organisations and packaging suppliers.
