Drying The desiccant wheel rotates slowly. As air is drawn through the wheel, the water molecules are removed and retained by the silica gel that is impregnated within the wheel itself.
The air is now dry and is blown into the room or building. This dry air encourages evaporation to take place and buildings therefore become dry.
The water, now trapped in the wheel, is removed by heating the wheel and the vaporised water is blown outside.
Aggreko’s industrial dehumidifiers do not require background heat for them to work and have airflow capacities up to 7000 m3
/hr, with one unit capable of
drying out very large areas. If site access is tight, all units can be sited outside and flexible ducting can be used to direct the air to the area required. Units can be fitted with remote humidistats for energy-saving capabilities.
Flooding support Storm Desmond wreaked havoc on Cumbria in December 2015, causing widespread flooding across the Lake District and resulting in thousands of submerged homes and businesses. One of the complex challenges we responded to was the intensive dry- out of a major civic building. Water tide marks had reached nine feet high on the ground storey, while the basement level had been totally submerged. Our engineers designed a package comprising ducted heating and desiccant humidifiers, powered by mobile generators. The project was regularly monitored by specialist engineers to ensure that damp was effectively removed, without damaging the fabric of the building.
In previous floods affecting Gloucestershire, we supported specialist contractor Belfor in tackling the clean-up operation at Cheltenham Leisure Centre.
To dry out the water logged building, we specified 10 desiccant dehumidifiers and four generators to supply the 705kVA of power needed to run all the equipment and provide electricity to the operations and security cabins. In addition, Aggreko also provided 1215m of cable and a fuel management service to ensure the equipment ran continuously.
Marine preservation
A leading seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services contractor had four of its survey ships laid-up in Leith Docks in 2016 due to the downturn in the oil and gas sector.
These vessels were susceptible to corrosion, condensation and freezing, caused by unwanted moisture and salt from coastal conditions. Aggreko was asked to develop a temperature control package to help maintain the humidity and temperature of vital areas of the vessels. This was to preserve critical assets and sensitive technical equipment on-board, ready for speedy reactivation when required.
After surveying the vessels, our temperature control engineers specified and installed four heat pump chillers to provide both hot and cold air, dependent on the ambient temperature. As heat pump chillers can heat and cool, we could ensure a stable temperature in the vessels regardless of changing temperatures. 12 desiccant dehumidifiers were installed to produce conditioned, dry air with a constant humidity of around 50% RH on board the ships, as well as 1 MW of temporary power generation on the docks to power them. The equipment was monitored using our proprietary remote monitoring technology to diagnose and correct any potential issues.
