TRAINING

F-Gas Certification - from a distance

Kelvin Kelly shares an update from Business Edge. T

echnicians that had previously undertaken the CITB F Gas Qualification were confronted with a real problem when

COVID-19 struck. As lockdown commenced, Training Centres were forced to shut their doors, leaving Technicians whose qualifications were about to expire unable to be reassessed through no fault of their own.

ACRIB, as well as REFCOM, tried without luck to get clarification from the Government on what could be done at this time to help these Technicians, who found themselves in a really difficult position where, if they continued working on systems without a valid F Gas Qualification, they would be doing so illegally, even though this was beyond their control.

Due to the recent relaxing of the UK lockdown, Business Edge Ltd have just carried out its first F Gas Re-Assessment Course during week 1 of June. To minimise contact between the Assessor and the Candidate, the theory element, which updates the Technician on the many changes that have occurred during the previous 5 years, was carried out via our new Interactive Webinar. Updates include the new F Gas Legislation, revised BS EN 378 and the increased use of alternative

refrigerants including CO2

and flammables. All of

which are covered in the Renewal Course. Business Edge had 20 attendees registered for the Interactive Webinar and each of them took part in the following four modules:  Module 1 - Basic Thermodynamics  Module 2 - Legislation and the Environmental Impact of Refrigerants

 Module 3 - Practical Procedures  Module 4 - Technologies that replace HFC Refrigerants

During these Webinars, candidates are able to interact with the training as these actually go out “live”. This allows them to ask questions and get clarification in the same way as they would as if they were in the same room as the Trainer. The candidates were then given a time slot to come to our Training Centre for their physical Assessment.

Business Edge has already reorganised all the training workshops to allow for safe social distancing, in accordance with Government guidelines.

The reduced number of Candidates being assessed at any one time allows us to give each person their own set of refrigeration tools and equipment and so there is no chance of cross contamination.

Feedback from the course attendees has been very positive indeed. There was a real and effective interaction during the Webinar and all the Technicians said that they actually preferred the new Interactive Webinar method, as the learning experience was the same, but with reduced travel time and cost, which is good for the Technician and his/her company, as well as the environment.

Business Edge plans to roll out more Interactive Webinar versions of its wide range of courses over the coming weeks.
