CHILLERS

remote monitoring systems provide an accurate understan ding of cooling load profiles. This is vital in helping end-users make informed decisions on plant operation. For example, our advisory service Star Technical Solutions (STS) assisted a brewery client that was looking to increase production and capacity on an existing plant. The current refrigeration load and spare capacity needed to be determined in order to assess the impact of a planned increase in production. Software was installed to measure the operation and performance of the existing chillers by monitoring the compressors and refrigerant pressures. This determined the refrigeration load profile and provided an accurate insight into spare capacity. The client was given access to the live data from the remote monitoring system via a web portal. Once live data was collected, an automatic analysis was carried out to show current load profile, plant efficiency and system capacity. Monitoring plant load enabled the client to better plan for increased production and ensure the system was ready to meet the increased demand. Recommendations were also made to allow the client to increase efficiency and capacity on the plant. These included modifying control of the condenser fans, to allow energy savings at low ambient temperatures.

Remote monitoring can also be utilised

effectively when businesses are considering future expansion and investment. A remote monitoring system was installed to gain a better understanding of the load profile at a large dairy processing plant. The end-user was looking to replace the existing cooling system with new chillers and commissioned STS to determine the system load.

Remote monitoring equipment was installed with no disruption to the operation of the existing chillers. In order to calculate the process load, surface-mounted sensors were installed to log the water flow rate and changing temperatures. Live data was recorded for four weeks in order to accurately capture the load profile. The cooling systems continued to operate as normal throughout the data capture period.

The data collected was analysed and the end- user was provided with a comprehensive report and detailed recommendations. Remote monitoring highlighted that peak loads rarely coincided on the two existing chillers. The report concluded that the required capacity on the new chiller could be significantly reduced from 4MW down to 3MW. By accurately monitoring the load profile, STS was able to confidently specify a new chiller with a much lower duty. This enabled the end-user to achieve

significant savings on both capital expenditure and installation costs.

We have seen an increase in the use of remote monitoring systems during the COVID-19

pandemic. Even when site access is limited, remote monitoring provides full visibility of equipment operation 24/7. Our newly formed Group business, Star Data Analytics, provides clients with access to an online dashboard that can be viewed via smartphone, tablet or PC. This allows end-users to determine system performance in real time and ensure any site visits by maintenance engineers are kept to an essential minimum. Throughout the lockdown, remote monitoring has played a key role in maintaining cooling system efficiency and site safety. Engineers have been able to analyse real-time data and make quick decisions about cooling equipment operation. Smart technology has proved it’s worth in the HVAC industry, whether the system has been built-in to new equipment or retrofitted to an existing chiller.

At the point of purchase, end users should have the confidence in the MEPS stated by the manufacturer. In reality, maintaining optimal efficiency performance is only achievable through an ongoing system of remote monitoring, effective data analysis and associated proactive maintenance.
