Investing in people
T
his month’s special focus is on training, but training isn’t just about young people – although there is rightly a strong focus on them as they are the future.
Training is also about reskilling people who could come in from other sectors bringing different experiences and skillsets which might just change trigger some true innovation. Often overlooked though is that training is about developing existing staff. There have been a lot webinars recently offering free training which people have been taking advantage of while in lockdown and furlough. There is no doubt that because we’re in challenging times at the moment, some companies are temporarily tightening their belts as far training is concerned and for good reason. But the fact remains that there are still many businesses who don’t invest in their staff even when things are ‘normal’. Reasons given are that it’s too expensive, they’ll want more
money, someone else will poach them, the government should fund it, and so on. But while you will certainly want to be strategic and selective about what training each staff member gets, it makes no sense not to invest in them at all. If you pay someone as little as you can get away with and
don’t invest in them, you get an employee who will do as little as they can get away with who isn’t invested in you. Isn’t your business worth more than that?
