Crowdfunding
LIBRARY OVERHAUL: £10,000
Karl Handy, PTA Secretary, St Giles CofE Primary School, Halstead, Essex (74 pupils)
THE PROJECT
To turn our library into a room that becomes a learning hub central to school life. We are seeking funding for
engine, but also through access to other resources.
THE NEED: Our library is just a quiet place where books are stored. It’s a great space, but needs modernising and equipping for 21st century reading and research. THE EVIDENCE: The library is currently underused as it is not a comfortable place to be. The out-of-date books aren’t meeting the needs of pupils. THE COST: We plan to turn the library into a woodland- themed space, with shelves carved from tree trunks, alongside interactive tables. After speaking to local craftsmen and researching technology solutions, our target is £10,000. We’ve secured a grant of
£5,000 for books, as well as £300 from a bring-and-buy book sale with refreshments. MARKETING: Our school website has proven useful and we have set up a dedicated link for our library appeal (
library.sggm.uk). Online channels such as Twitter and Facebook have also been branded with our appeal. Whilst our social media following isn’t huge, posts are enthusiastically shared and retweeted. The local press is also aware of the project. We have fewer than 200
parents to call on, therefore we have identied other groups we will approach. Our Year 3 and 4 children are using a ‘persuasive
writing’ module to write letters asking local companies to donate. We intend to distribute these to 100 companies based on the team contacting 10 each. VISUALS: Publicity materials are close to being completed. Handmade bookmarks will regularly go home with pupils to keep awareness high. REWARDS: Our rewards are targeted more at sponsors, so the amounts are quite high: donors of £5 or more will receive a mention on our website; £100 or more will also get a ‘thanks’ on Twitter or Facebook; £250 will be given a third-tier mention on the plaque we plan to have installed in the library, plus a certicate of thanks; £500 or more will receive a second-tier mention on the plaque, an individual press release, and a certicate of thanks. Donors of £1,000 or more will appear on the top-tier of the plaque, in an individual press release with a photo, get a certicate of thanks, and naming rights on a piece of equipment. COMMUNICATION: Regular updates via CrowdFundEd, newsletters, the school website and social media. TIMESCALE: 65 days WHAT’S NEXT? Now that our CrowdFundEd page has launched, we hope our updates will encourage people to keep parting with their cash!
THEATRE TRAINING: £1,500
Kathryn Cox, Director of Science and Technology, Cantell School, Southampton (856 pupils)
THE PROJECT
THE NEED: The Point Theatre will use the improvisation workshops to engage, inspire, and teach sustainable life skills to 240 disadvantaged students over two years (20 students per school, per year in six schools). Working with teachers
and independent evaluation bodies, The Point Theatre will monitor progress in students’ self-esteem and wellbeing, condence in expressing themselves, readiness to participate and engage with activities, sensitivity when listening and responding to others, ability to take risks and use divergent thinking, and aspiration for life and learning. By inspiring positive change, we aim to unlock students’ potential to become active, engaged learners. THE COST: The total cost per school is £3,000 and The Point Theatre hopes to secure 50% of this through external
EXPERT ADVICE
‘We would encourage schools to start off with a project that has the potential to engage a wide base of supporters. As crowdfunding puts your project in front of everyone, if it fails to achieve its target, it can do so publicly. If you think your project might be a challenge, do some offline fundraising before you go live. The litmus test for the viability of a project is whether you can name five people who you know would immediately pledge. Aim to get commitment from a number of people who will all their donation as soon as the project launches. Once you have some pledges, more will naturally follow.’ Lewis Clayton, Account Director at Hubbub

funding (grant applications). We need to raise £1,500 to guarantee our place for at least one year. MARKETING: The Point Theatre is hoping to provide video footage. We no longer have a Media and Marketing Ofcer within the school, so I am waiting to hear who else can help with marketing. REWARDS: We would like to offer rewards and have used the price points suggested in the FundEd Rewards Guide. COMMUNICATION: We will launch late June, through social media, the school website, letters home to parents, and in the local press. TIMESCALE: We plan to run this for four weeks, ready to begin Improv4 this autumn. WHAT NEXT? We have applied to a local community fund – if successful, we can add this to our campaign page as an ofine donation.
