Certified as a PDF/X1a file travel reviews BRITISH AIRWAYS

Seats: The cabin felt spacious, with high ceilings and a 2-3-2 configuration. There’s a satisfactory seat width of 18.5 inches, a pitch of 38 inches, a winged headrest and power socket plus noise- reducing headphones and amenity kit. Food & drink: Premium drinks served included Bombay Sapphire gin with Fever Tree tonic, followed by a quaffable Argentinian wine. I tucked into a three-course meal with delicious chocolate dessert. The lady next to me had forgotten to order a veggie meal but one was found for her. Snacks were on offer at the back of the aircraft for those still feeling peckish.

UNITED AIRLINES

Seats: Economy seats, laid out in a 3-3 configuration, with 31-inch pitch and 17.3-inch width, felt a little small for a long-haul trip. Economy Plus would have added a welcome six inches more legroom, but the seat width was the same. I longed for business-first, with its flat beds. But since the flight was fairly empty, I comfortably stretched out across three seats after take-off. Food & drink: Dinner was a choice of spinach and cheese-filled pasta, which was quite good, or chicken. The meal came with free wine or soft drinks. Ice cream, served from a cooler, was a nice surprise dessert.

CZECH RAILWAYS

Seats: I had all six seats of the first class compartment to myself, with ample leg room and overhead storage. The soft, leather chairs were ideal for a mid-journey snooze, while the wide windows made it easy to admire the passing scenery. Food & drink: I was regularly asked if I’d like a tea or coffee, and my ticket came with a free bottle of water. There was a restaurant car serving reasonably priced lunch, drinks and snacks, where you could either sit in or take food back to the carriage. Service: The staff were polite and attentive, even guiding me to my seat

when I got lost after boarding the train. I was offered a free (Czech) newspaper and the chirpy train guard woke me up once we reached Budapest. Tickets: Purchasing tickets from the official Czech Railways website is straightforward and cheaper than other train websites. The site allows you to choose your seat, telling you if it comes with a view and power socket. Tickets arrive either via post or email. What else: The wi-fi wasn’t working but the comfort and beautiful scenery more than made up for the lack of connection. Farida Zeynalova

For breakfast, there was a small ham and cheese croissant. Entertainment: A touchscreen seat- back monitor offered a decent choice of free movies, TV shows, music and games. Earphones were available at no charge. My screen stopped working mid-flight, but it was quickly rebooted. What else: The flight was delayed for more than an hour before boarding. We were kept informed, which did help. Economy seating is tight, but you get what you pay for. Food, entertainment and service were all much better than expected. Geri Bain

Entertainment: A range of films are featured on the touch screen console plus a good range of TV series and documentaries, some destination led. Service: One particularly convivial crew member, on hearing I had a horse, gave me his old pair of work gloves which he thought would make excellent mucking out utensils. That goes beyond the call of duty in my book. Overall: Great flight, worth paying a bit more for premium, especially as you can take two 23kg bags in the hold rather than the one you’re allowed in economy. Sam Lewis
