A detailed monitoring and mitigation plan must be developed as the design and Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) process develops.

The MMO expects to see appropriate mitigation included in the ES for cable laying operations to minimise adverse impacts on S. spinulosa habitat.


EATL have made a commitment to pre- construction surveys to assess the presence of S. spinulosa reef. Following the surveys, cables would be micro-sited to avoid S. spinulosa reef.

The proposed cable route also crosses a licensed marine disposal site; however, sampling for sediment-surface contaminants at this site has revealed no evidence of contamination. Therefore, it is proposed that further sediment quality sampling is not required to inform the EIA. The MMO concurs with this decision.

The MMO recommend that the ES should not make the case that colonisation of the turbine foundations by benthic species is a positive, as no development should seek to change the natural environment.
