Aviation Events Programme

When & Where

Keynote Interview: Christoph Mueller,

CEO Malaysia Airlines When: Wednesday 4 November, 14:00-15:00 Where: Platinum Suite 1 Headlining the aviation programme this year is the man dubbed ‘the Terminator’, German-born Christoph Mueller, who was charged with restructuring Malaysia Airlines following its ‘annus horribilis’ in 2014. Mueller, who became Chief Executive in May 2015, has been tasked with overhauling the Malaysian flag carrier following years of financial losses and the two disasters of 2014: flight MH370 disappeared with 239 passengers and crew and, four months later, flight MH17 was shot down while in Ukrainian airspace with the loss of 298 passengers and crew. He has previously held senior roles at Aer Lingus, Belgium’s Sabena and Germany’s Lufthansa.

Mueller will talk about how he is dealing with the airline which he described as ‘technically bankrupt’. He will be axing about 6,000 jobs – reducing the workforce to 14,000 – and is expected to cut unprofitable

long-haul routes in the face of stiff competition. He has recruited key new executives to help the turnaround including Paul Simmons as Chief Commercial Officer (previously with Flybe and easyJet) and Peter Bellew as Chief Operations Officer (previously from Ryanair).

Mueller will be interviewed by aviation expert, John Strickland, Director of JLS Consulting. Strickland said: “Mueller must have one of the toughest assignments in corporate history. Aside from the twin tragedies of 2014, Malaysian had been losing money and recently struggled with many challenges. The airline made a bold move to appoint a non-Malaysian as CEO, and it will be fascinating to hear how Mueller is taking on this challenge.”

Seminar Information: Malaysia Airlines had already been losing money over a number of years when it faced

not one but two tragic accidents in 2014. The airline has struggled with inefficiency, intense competition and political challenges, compounded by the aftermath of the accidents. This spring Christoph Mueller was appointed new CEO, and WTM London is delighted to conduct one of his first interviews since taking the post. As he relaunches the airline’s brand, industry expert John Strickland will ask him about the challenges ahead in turning the airline around and how his previous experience may help. Moderator: John Strickland, JLS Consulting Speaker: Christoph Mueller, CEO, Malaysia Airlines
