WTM London hosts the world’s most comprehensive and thought-provoking agenda on responsible tourism. Central is WTM World Responsible Tourism Day, held this year on Wednesday 4 November in association with UNWTO. The programme is carefully devised with advice from Harold Goodwin, Professor of Responsible Tourism at Manchester Metropolitan University and founder of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism. Panelists discuss how tourism can be used to make places better to live in, recognising that great places to live are great places to visit. Barcelona and Venice are major tourism destinations but they are both experiencing the problems of success, including the growing numbers of day visitors arriving by coach and cruise-liner. Carbon Resource Efficiency Good Practice When: 14:30-15:30 Where: South Gallery 19&20 Carbon efficiency is a major issue for all sectors of the tourism industry; how can the greenhouse gases emitted by airlines, road transport, accommodation and cruise lines be reduced? In December there will be another attempt by governments to agree an effective regulatory framework to bring carbon pollution under control. What can the industry do now to reduce its emissions and improve the efficiency of its use of fossil fuels? Speakers: Samantha Annandale, Hotel Verde; Professor Callum Thomas, Manchester Metropolitan University; Fran Hughes, International Tourism Partnership; and Liz Faulkener, Manchester Central.


WTM Responsible Tourism Opening & The 2015 World Responsible Tourism Awards When: 10:30-12:45 Where: WTM Global Stage AS850 Professor Kevin Anderson, Professor of Energy and Climate Change at the University of Manchester, will give his keynote speech at 10:40 on the challenge of greenhouse gas emissions and the climate changes which result.


The Stephen Sackur Interview When: 10:55-11:45 Focusing on how the industry is responding to climate change. Speakers: Richard Mills, Strategy Director at Boeing UK & Ireland; Brigitta Witt, Global Head, Corporate Responsibility, Hyatt; Hon Derek Hanekon, Minister of Tourism South Africa; and Taleb Rifai, Secretary General, UNWTO.
