THE GOALS

Similar in shape to a hockey goal (2m x 3m), the size and shape of the goal often means the space around the goalkeeper is high in the goal and so disguised shots into this area can play an important part in effective finishing.

As all players are permitted to move into the penalty area, an effective tactic is to play passes across the goal eliminating the goalkeeper and finding a supporting player at the far post who has a clearer strike at goal. The weighted ball is difficult to swerve so the toe-poke can become a lethal weapon in front of goal.

ROLLING SUBS

With squad sizes consisting of 12 outfield players and regular changes made to the five players on court the intensity of the event is extremely high.

The best teams will have players with specialist skills available for certain positions or periods of the game, tactically providing the coach with a huge variety of options.

Due to the physical load it is not unusual for players to be on court for less than two or three minutes in one stint with full groups of four outfield players being replaced at the same time.

OTHER RULES

• With the ball permitted to go over head height and from back to front in one throw from the goalkeeper, aerial control in advanced positions under high pressure is a key part of the game

• Kicks in’s, corners and goalkeepers’ distribution are all restricted to four seconds so players need to be alert, focused and ready to receive the ball.

• Each coach is allowed one time out per half to speak to their players often making a tactical change.

• Teams are restricted to only five fouls per half and any subsequent foul will result in a free shot at goal for the opposition from the 10 metre mark. This restriction develops the skill of defending when it becomes critical not to foul.
