Study Visit:

Toulon

Tournament U20

Back in May, England U18s coach, Neil Dewsnip and a group of youth development experts underwent a study visit to the U20 Toulon tournament in France, here is a summary of some of their findings.

Background The Toulon Festival is a major event on the U20 International fixture calendar. The hugely competitive tournament brings together teams from around the world offering young players the opportunity to experience different cultures and different styles of play. In many ways it is a mini World Cup.

Since its inception as a solely international team tournament in 1975, over 1500 future full internationals have appeared at the festival. David Beckham, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard have all appeared in the tournament for England and with a host of the game’s most exciting talent on a show again this year it was no surprise scouts from across the world descended on the tournament.

Organisation 2 Groups of 5

Group One Mexico

Portugal France Chile China

Group Two Brazil

Colombia England Qatar

South Korea

Each game lasted 80 minutes (2 x40 minutes) with fixtures hosted at lower league French clubs and attended by approximately 500 people. Stadiums were basic with some of the standard of pitches presenting a challenge.
