An example of how to use the ingredients of effective computer game design to build better football sessions.
THE STOPPAGE TIME GAME
Practice:
The game has a name. Important for the players to be able to connect with the activity and makes it more memorable
• Two teams plus one goalkeeper • 2-3 minute interval games - 'Stoppage Time' • Perhaps allow the teams to adopt a club/country/player
Role-playing example. Allowing players to use their imagination
Objective and aims:
In each stoppage time window the attacking team try to score as many goals as possible. Teams then swap over and try to chase/defend the target set
Competitive and varied experiences Organisation:
• Unlimited footballs at a designated start area. As soon as one ball goes dead the next one is straight into play. Instant repetition
• Spotted line as reference or offside line for defenders Increasing realism to the game
• Feeders? (Depend on numbers) • Numbers - may have to rotate attackers and defenders after each ball (Collaboration)
Coaching factors and outcomes:
Defenders – When you win the ball what can you do to try and help your team to win the game?
Attackers – How can you adapt to the way in which the defenders play against you? (deep or high)
Adaptation and progression:
1. Offer incentives to give choices around playing with more, less or the same numbers
Choices and decisions to make as a group. Problems to solve. Risk and reward
2. Allow timeouts More opportunity for collaboration
3. Option of goal for defenders to counter-attack and score in (steal points?) More realism to the game
4. If defenders win it back, decide to keep it and play back to the goalkeeper then attackers can send another in to help win the ball back ‘Unlocking’ feature
5. Use a tiered level system i.e. start easier. With every goal the challenge becomes harder (one less attacker/one more defender)
6. Instead of a set time period, time how long it takes to score three goals and have them beat the clock rather than the score Offers top score/personal best element
